Similar to several (yet not all) SNL veterans, Mike Myers recently reappeared at Studio 8H for the show’s 50th anniversary special, hinting at a possible extended stay. The beloved humorist made an unanticipated guest appearance on SNL this week during the cold opening, portraying Elon Musk. He embraced his eccentric energy and speech patterns for the impression, which garnered positive feedback on social media. However, it was the t-shirt he donned during the cast sign-offs at the end of the show that truly ignited conversations among viewers.
Towards the end of the program, when the host typically acknowledges and thanks the musical performer, cast members, and everyone waves goodbye, Myers made an appearance wearing a vest and a t-shirt. As host Shane Gillis was speaking to the almost entire cast, Myers parted his vest or short-sleeved jacket to reveal a t-shirt with the message “Canada Is Not For Sale.” You can find a snapshot of that moment displayed below.
The shirt subtly reflects the current strained relations between the U.S. and Canada, with President Trump’s recent proposals to impose tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports adding fuel to the fire. His frequent suggestions for Canada to become the 51st U.S. state have sparked a wave of nationalistic pride among Canadians. This newfound patriotism has been evident in various ways, such as booing the U.S. National Anthem at recent sporting events like the 4 Nations Face-Off hockey tournament and WWE’s Elimination Chamber in Toronto.
It’s uncertain if Lorne Michaels, creator and showrunner of SNL, had advance knowledge about the t-shirt. While both Michaels and Myers are originally from Canada, it was Michaels who became a U.S. citizen in the late 1980s. In contrast, Myers resides in the U.S., but he has consistently been more vocal and openly proud of his Canadian heritage, even authoring a book titled Canada.
Overall response to Will Ferrell’s portrayal of Elon Musk was generally favorable, considering social media as a fair reflection. Fans, in general, were neutral regarding the script and the skit itself, but they commended Ferrell’s enthusiasm and likeness to Musk. Many even posted side-by-side comparisons to highlight their resemblance. Moreover, several embeds of the casting announcement received over 50,000 likes on platform X. You can watch the sketch here…
It’s uncertain what the long-term impact will be, but SNL’s revival of Dana Carvey as Musk didn’t seem to last. However, it did create a buzz that’s hard to ignore. If Myers continues living in New York, he might find himself regularly portraying the tech billionaire, similar to how Alec Baldwin played President Trump or more recently, Maya Rudolph portrayed Vice President Harris.
Let’s be patient for now; luckily, it won’t be too long before we can catch the upcoming episode of the show, which is set to air next week and features Lady Gaga as its host.
