Miley Cyrus Sued for Alleged Copyright Infringement Over "Flowers," Accused of Copying Bruno Mars

As a long-time fan of both Miley Cyrus and Bruno Mars, I find myself in a bit of a conundrum with the recent copyright infringement allegations against Miley. On one hand, I’ve always admired Miley for her boldness and creativity, but on the other, I can’t help but feel a twinge of discomfort when it comes to copyright issues.

Miley Cyrus finds herself in a legal dispute concerning claims of copyright violation related to her 2023 hit single “Flowers,” which won a Grammy for self-love. The company, Tempo Music Investments, alleges that the song bears strong resemblance to Bruno Mars’ 2013 track “When I Was Your Man.” However, it’s important to note that Bruno Mars himself is not the one bringing the lawsuit and is not listed as the plaintiff in this case.

It has been reported that a lawsuit alleges that Miley Cyrus’ song “Flowers” shares similar lyrics with Justin Bieber’s “When I Was Your Man.” In Bieber’s song he sings lines like “I shoulda bought you flowers, and held your hand” and “Take you to every party, cause all you wanted to do was dance,” while Cyrus sings “I can buy myself flowers,” and “I can take myself dancing, and I can hold my own hand.” The lawsuit suggests that the two songs have identical melodies, harmonies, and choruses as the basis for their claim.

In simpler terms, the lawsuit states that there are numerous similarities between two songs, ‘Flowers’ and ‘When I Was Your Man,’ which suggest that ‘Flowers’ was created using elements from ‘When I Was Your Man.’ The lawsuit is currently pending in court. Additionally, the complaint alleges that the Defendants have unlawfully reproduced, distributed, and profited from ‘When I Was Your Man’ without permission, thus initiating this copyright infringement case.

Tempo Music Investments owns a share of the copyright of Mars’ hit track following its acquisition of songwriter Philip Lawrence’s music catalog. The company also lists songwriters Gregory Hein and Michael Pollack who co-wrote Cyrus’ song, liable. Other defendants named include Sony Music Publishing and Apple. The accusation also claims that the opening vocal line of Miley Cyrus’ chorus begins and ends in the same chords as “When I Was Your Man.” Tempo is seeking damages, but has not yet determined an amount, along with demanding Cyrus to stop reproducing, distributing or publicly performing “Flowers.” The song won record of the year at the 2024 Grammy awards.
