As a movie buff with over three decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I find myself intrigued by the prospect of Miley Cyrus reimagining Nicolas Cage’s role in the cult classic Mandy as a musical. It’s certainly an unusual turn of events, but let’s not forget that we live in a world where Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis biopic is on the horizon.
Here’s an intriguing piece of trivia: Miley Cyrus once contemplated reimagining the film ‘Mandy’, initially starring Nicolas Cage, as a musical production! Yes, you heard it right. This unusual idea was indeed proposed, and she even expressed interest in playing the lead character, Red Miller, in a gender-bent version. In this rendition, she aimed to leverage the opportunity to advance her career as a musician. The original film, released in 2018, depicted Cage as a vengeful lumberjack seeking retribution after his girlfriend was killed by a secretive cult.
Cyrus openly expressed to Harper’s Bazaar that “Mandy” is among her most cherished films. She even ventured to discuss a potential remake with director Panos Cosmatos, although this idea didn’t materialize. Intriguingly, she mentioned her desire to portray the role originally played by Nicolas Cage in the film.
I’m captivated by the fact that it’s a blend of romance and revenge, two elements that make up some of the most compelling tragic tales. My curiosity towards these themes has been unwavering since forever, and continues to be so.
Mandy, as it turns out, is quite an impressive Cage film, and much like the style of Cosmatos, it’s a dream-like journey that feels like a vivid nightmare drenched in blood. This movie has earned a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% approval from critics, despite only grossing $1.7 million at the box office. However, it has since become a cult classic mainly because of Nicolas Cage’s outstanding performance. Despite not having the chance to work together on a remake, the two are now collaborating for Cyrus’ upcoming album, which she described as being “inspired by Pink Floyd’s The Wall.” This collaboration definitely piques our curiosity.
Could a Musical Version of ‘Mandy’ Actually Work?
It might sound unusual, but the idea of a Cosmatos-directed musical has us curious in an unexpected way. Though we wouldn’t have initially considered it, upon reflection, it seems more fitting. The director’s distinctive style would undoubtedly complement the concept, and when combined with Cyrus’ powerful singing voice, there’s potential for success. Despite any skepticism, she is a remarkably gifted singer.
We’re envisioning a scene reminiscent of a psychedelic journey similar to The Beatles’ “Yellow Submarine” or something influenced by Pink Floyd. Cosmatos might infuse a ’60s counterculture ambiance throughout, while Cyrus embarks on a quest for revenge, carrying a sunflower stained with blood in her hair the entire time. Truth be told, that scenario sounds quite intriguing to us now.
Well then, it looks like we’ll simply have to be patient and find out what the duo cooks up for her next album. As for Nicholas Cage, he’s basking in the glory of this year’s horror sensation Longlegs, and there’s plenty more in store. He’s set to play Jesus’ father in an upcoming horror film titled The Carpenter’s Son, yes, you heard that right! And if that wasn’t enough, he’ll also be donning the mantle of everyone’s favorite web-slinger in the upcoming live action series for Amazon Prime Video, Spider-Man Noir.
