Among the top comedies airing today, “Hacks” on HBO, featuring Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder, is undoubtedly one of the standouts. Debuting in the 2025 TV schedule on April 10th, this series follows Debra Vance (Smart) and Ava Daniels (Einbinder), who are now teaming up for a historic late-night show. I’m absolutely buzzing with anticipation to see how their dynamic unfolds in the new season. However, what has me even more intrigued is the hint of a potential spinoff that the creators have been subtly suggesting.
Should you happen to have enjoyed an episode of the series titled “Hacks“, you’re likely aware that it brims with amusing and peculiar supporting characters who share outstanding camaraderie. Any one of these characters could be a strong candidate for a possible spinoff. However, among all contenders, Jimmy (Paul W. Downs), Debra and Ava’s agent, and his assistant-turned-partner Kayla (Megan Stalter) are currently the top choices in the minds of the show creators as potential leads when “Hacks” eventually concludes, if it ever does.
Even though they’re enthusiastic about the idea, simply their eagerness won’t be enough to secure a spinoff from HBO. That’s why co-showrunner Jen Statsky told Deadline that if fans are truly committed, they should actively express their desire for it. And here I am, expressing my demand for it!
From the get-go, Jimmy and Kayla have been captivating standouts, making it effortless to cheer them on. These charming underdogs are coming close to overthrowing Debra and Ava as my preferred team on this series. The creators, Statsky, Aniello, and Downs, have taken notice of their impact, which is why Season 4 is brimming with more antics from Jimmy and Kayla. One such change includes the introduction of a new assistant for them, played by Robby Hoffman.

In simpler terms, Statsky refers to this move as “constructing a larger universe,” which is advantageous for a possible sequel because the series might require characters other than Debra and Ava. Ideally, their stories would find resolution in the last season of Hacks, whenever that occurs.
Nevertheless, Stalter, the comedian behind the lively character Kayla, shares her personal desires for a potential Jimmy/Kayla spinoff series, as she discussed with Deadline:
I find it amusing to imagine a situation where she becomes pregnant and Jimmy has to assist her in raising the child. It’s like throwing a curveball at her to see how she adapts, but also observing Jimmy being unexpectedly involved would be quite humorous and peculiar. I don’t necessarily believe they should be a couple, but if they were to jointly raise a baby, it would give the impression that they are more than just friends. Intriguingly, I’d like to see them manage this shared responsibility together in their workplace.
The storylines involving pregnancies on comedies often don’t fare well, but this could be an exception that proves the rule since I can’t get enough of the concept. It promises a lot of humor as we watch Kayla mature into a more responsible adult (fingers crossed). Additionally, the prospect of Jimmy getting embroiled in these events is ripe with comedic potential. Given their ambiguous relationship, especially as seen in Season 3’s finale when Jimmy’s business proposal was misunderstood by onlookers who assumed it was a marriage proposal, this situation only adds to the humor.
Beyond just being funny, Hacks also skillfully weaves in social commentary and critique within its episodes, a trait that could potentially carry over if the proposed spinoff follows Stalter’s concept. Given the prevalence of women balancing motherhood with demanding careers, yet limited representation on TV, it would be quite fitting for this theme to be explored further.
Currently, a spinoff focusing on Kayla and Jimmy is merely a wish, but luckily, viewers can look forward to seeing these characters interact in Season 4 of “Hacks.
