Mindy Kaling Boards Her “Favorite Film of the Year”, Live-Action Short ‘Anuja’, as Producer (Exclusive)

As a long-time fan of Mindy Kaling’s work, I couldn’t be more thrilled about her latest venture as a producer for the live-action short, “Anuja.” Having grown up watching The Office and The Mindy Project, it’s heartwarming to see Kaling using her platform to bring attention to such an impactful story.

Based on its successes at the HollyShorts Film Festival, the Montclair Film Festival, and the New York International Short Film Festival, Mindy Kaling has now joined the live-action short film “Anuja” as a producer. This information is exclusive to The Hollywood Reporter.

The story Anuja, authored by Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai, follows the life of a talented nine-year-old girl named Anuja, portrayed by Sajda Pathan. She works in a garment factory in New Delhi, India. When she receives an extraordinary opportunity to go to school, she faces a profound dilemma that will shape her own future and that of her sister Palak (Ananya Shanbhag).

Adam J. Graves and Suchitra Mattai’s extraordinary film, titled Anuja, is my top pick of the year. It tells the tale of a remarkable nine-year-old Indian girl and her sister. I’m thrilled to be part of this project as a producer, having been moved by their exceptional work,” Kaling expressed.

Kaling is primarily recognized for playing a leading role in the American adaptation of “The Office,” as well as creating her own series, “The Mindy Project,” and producing successful shows like “Never Have I Ever” on Netflix and “The Sex Lives of College Girls” on HBO Max.

Mattai, who is also involved in production, commented: “We are deeply honored by Mindy’s faith in the strength of this tale, and we couldn’t ask for a better ally to propel Anuja ahead.” Director Graves also expressed: “We are confident that her powerful voice will boost the discussion on child labor and girls’ education, enabling the film to leave a stronger imprint.

The movie is gathering steam ahead of the Oscars with victories such as the Best Live-Action Short award at the HollyShorts Film Festival in LA, the Audience Award at the Montclair Film Festival, and the Grand Prize at the New York International Short Film Festival under its belt.

In October, it was disclosed that Guneet Monga Kapoor, known for movies like “The Elephant Whisperers” and “Period. End of Sentence”, has additionally taken on an executive producer role in the film. The collaboration between Kaling and Monga Kapoor is reinforced by Shine Global (the organization behind “War/Dance” and the Oscar-winning short documentary “Inocente”), Krushan Naik Films (“Resurgence”), and Salaam Baalak Trust (SBT), a nonprofit based in India.

The film also features Indian television actor Nagesh Bhonsle, best known internationally for his supporting role as police deputy commissioner in Hotel Mumbai alongside Dev Patel. Krushan Naik (Resurgence), Aaron Kopp (Saving Face, Liyana, Hunting Ground), and Alexandra Blaney (co-CEO and creative director, Shine Global)also serve as producers on the film. Other team members include Michael Graves and Ksheetij Saini.
