Video game movies aren’t generally well-received, often falling short of expectations. Ranking these adaptations from worst to best can be a lengthy process, leaving it uncertain where “A Minecraft Movie” will ultimately land. The initial trailer didn’t exactly excite fans, but the final one released before its April 4 premiere has shown some improvement, though it’s still unclear if it will live up to expectations.
The preview showcases cubed pandas, a place called the Nether (often associated with loss of joy and creativity), and an unexpected cameo by Jennifer Coolidge at the end. Although viewers aren’t expecting it to be a classic, some remain hopeful, like Reddit user LooseSeal88: “A tiny part of me thinks there might be more to this than meets the eye and it could receive praise similar to The Lego Movie from critics. On the other hand, it may turn out as bad as it seems.” Similarly, user Ivscksi also expressed cautious optimism: “The live-action parts look poor, but overall, this still appears entertaining.” Both users mentioned elements such as chicken jockeys and Elytra Easter eggs as proof that effort was put into creating something Minecraft fans might find enjoyable.
It can be challenging to tell who genuinely thinks a Minecraft movie will be good and who is just joking about it. After the final trailer was released, some people posted the Martin Scorsese “Absolute Cinema” gif, but this could simply be a joke. Whether it’s cinema or not, if it provides 100 minutes of fun entertainment to distract from the harshness of reality, then it will have done its job effectively.
The final Minecraft Movie trailer still looks awful, according to fans
As a devoted fan, I must confess that there’s a glimmer of hope in me about the potential of “A Minecraft Movie,” but it’s more like a flicker than a beacon. Most of us are hesitant to get too excited, given the initial impressions of the film. Scanning through comments on X (formerly Twitter), I’ve come across some rather blunt opinions such as, “This looks absolutely dreadful” and “If it doesn’t go back where it came from, there will be trouble.” @DontSmileDean on X (formerly Twitter) expressed a similar sentiment when he said, “It seems less like a Minecraft movie and more like a film that keeps referencing Minecraft.
Many people are criticizing the choice of Jack Black to play Steve in the “Minecraft” video game, and on Reddit, u/bbqsauceboi feels he’s not suitable for the role: “There are a lot of aspects I don’t like, but what bothers me most is Jack Black. He’s veering into excessive self-parody.” However, u/TheFeelsGoodMan gave some mild appreciation to one of Black’s co-stars, Jason Momoa, stating: “Jason Momoa appears to be giving his best to make this project successful.
For quite a while, there’s been apprehension surrounding the “Minecraft” movie, given its lengthy development process spanning more than a decade. Frankly, based on current expectations, it doesn’t seem particularly promising; however, we’re keeping our fingers crossed for an unexpected delight.
Many believe A Minecraft Movie should have been fully animated
Regarding “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” of 2023, there’s no denying its approach to the whimsical Mushroom Kingdom was spot on – it captured the essence of a cartoon perfectly. In contrast, the idea of a “Minecraft Movie” featuring live-action actors interacting with pixelated villagers and creatures feels awkward and uncomfortable to many. On platforms like X and Reddit, there’s a widespread belief that the movie would have been more appealing had it been fully animated. The reason being, when you see Jason Momoa alongside a CGI rendered creeper in the same frame, it seems unrealistic and takes viewers out of the experience.
Perhaps “A Minecraft Movie” might surprise us yet. The latest trailer unveils the Nether, a place Steve calls “devoid of any happiness or originality.” If the movie manages to critique and mock how generic modern blockbusters have become, as some hope it will, that would be an interesting commentary. However, if the film turns out to be as disappointing as predicted, critics could find ample opportunity to include Steve’s line in their reviews, suggesting the film too lacks creativity and was merely a cash grab based on a popular franchise.
Currently, “Minecraft” boasts more than 200 million monthly active users. If just half of them decide to watch a “Minecraft Movie,” it would undoubtedly be a financial triumph, potentially leading to numerous sequels and spin-offs. At that stage, we’d truly grasp the concept of “unbridled success” in terms of joy and creativity.
