The latest installment in the Mission: Impossible franchise, titled “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,” garnered attention due to its impressive opening at the box office, hinting at the possibility of setting a significant record for Tom Cruise’s films. Despite the underwhelming financial performance of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” anticipation was high for the eighth film in the series. The marketing surrounding Tom Cruise’s return for “The Final Reckoning” suggested it could be the last Mission: Impossible movie. Packed with thrilling new stunts, it emerged as a highly anticipated theatrical release for many.
The sentiment was mirrored in the opening weekend box office earnings of “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning.” This film broke a franchise record during its Memorial Day weekend debut, raking in $64 million over three days. When accounting for Memorial Day itself, the total earnings reached $79 million. In essence, this marked a new high for the Mission: Impossible series, spanning almost 30 years of filmmaking. The sequel continued to perform well during its first week of release. However, as it enters its second week, “The Final Reckoning” has slowed down from its remarkable pace initially set.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Was On Pace To Be The Franchise’s Highest Grossing Movie Domestically
Mission: Impossible – Fallout Holds The Record
In just its first weekend, “The Final Reckoning” outperformed all other “Mission: Impossible” films at the U.S. box office during the same timeframe, setting a new benchmark. This achievement gave Tom Cruise’s potential final performance as Ethan Hunt an opportunity to wrap up the franchise on a financially successful note. As reported by Box Office Mojo, “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” holds the record for the highest domestic gross, earning $220,159,104 over 84 days in cinemas. This impressive total was achieved following a franchise-best opening weekend of $61 million.
The movie titled “The Final Reckoning” started off stronger than “Fallout” during their initial weekend screenings, suggesting it might outperform “Fallout” and set a new domestic box office record for the “Mission: Impossible” series if its theatrical run maintains this pace. Remarkably, this sixth installment surpassed the previous high of $215,409,889 set by “Mission: Impossible II.” If “The Final Reckoning” sustains its momentum, it could be on track to establish a new domestic franchise benchmark.

Having an extended weekend to boost ticket sales on a weekday significantly benefited “The Final Reckoning”. By the fourth day, it had raked in $79 million as opposed to its sixth installment which had earned $68 million after the same duration. Notably, “The Final Reckoning outperformed Fallout for the remainder of the week,” despite the latter consistently earning over a million dollars more per day.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning Has Now Fallen Behind Fallout’s Pace
The 10th Day Of Release Was A Turning Point
According to the data presented, The Final Reckoning was initially trailing Fallout in box office earnings. However, by the end of its second weekend or the tenth day in cinemas overall, The Final Reckoning had regained its lead. Fallout’s domestic total stood at $124,811,186 after concluding its second weekend in theaters. In contrast, The Final Reckoning wrapped up its second weekend with a total of approximately $122,536,128, giving it a slight edge of around $2.3 million over Fallout’s eighth installment.
A significant factor contributing to this decrease is that “The Final Reckoning” faced tougher competition in the box office, resulting in larger drops. Specifically, Tom Cruise’s movie has stayed in second place behind Lilo & Stitch, and it had to compete against the debut of The Karate Kid: Legends. Meanwhile, Fallout managed to stay at the top of the box office due to weak openings for Disney’s Christopher Robin and the comedy The Spy Who Dumped Me.
Compared to the sixth movie, the most recent film experienced a larger decrease in its second weekend, dropping by 57.5%. This was the second-worst drop for the franchise, surpassed only by Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’s record-breaking fall of 64.6%. The Final Reckoning performed more similarly to previous films in terms of drops, but Fallout had one of the smallest declines in the series. As a result, The Final Reckoning now trails behind Fallout for the first time at the domestic box office.
Can The Final Reckoning Still Beat Fallout’s Domestic Box Office Record?
The Odds Aren’t In Its Favor
After blowing an $11 million advantage earlier, “The Final Reckoning” now trails “Fallout,” potentially jeopardizing its chance to surpass the domestic record for the franchise. The movie’s nearly three-hour length reduces the number of daily screenings in theaters, and the IMAX exclusivity will soon come to an end. Tom Cruise has left no stone unturned with his marketing efforts, including a global press tour.
As more summer blockbusters enter the scene, it’s becoming increasingly challenging for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning to improve its box office performance in the U.S., as it trails behind Fallout. Instead, the film is aiming to secure one of the highest earnings spots in the franchise’s history domestically, rather than catching up with its domestic rival. However, internationally, the movie has been doing fairly well, amassing a total of $353 million.
