Moana 2 has made significant waves since it sailed onto Disney+ on Mar. 12, with viewership numbers that would surely light up the Heart of Te Fiti and the movie’s Polynesian princess, and no doubt prompt her demigod friend Maui to claim credit for the triumph with a bold and boisterous, “You’re welcome.” According to TheWrap, the animated sequel has set an incredible record after drawing a staggering 27.3 million views within its first five days of release on Disney+, as it has earned the third-highest launch ever for a theatrical movie on the streaming platform.
The movie, which features Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson as the voices of Moana and Maui, respectively, has also scored the best streaming debut for a Walt Disney Animation Studios title since Encanto, which premiered on the platform in Dec. 2021 after only 30 days in theaters (but we don’t talk about Bruno). The streaming success of Moana 2 only adds to its remarkable box office haul, which set a new record for the biggest Thanksgiving opening weekend and continued to bring in a tidal wave of cinemagoers, with $1.05 billion earned worldwide by the end of its theatrical run.
Moana 2, which was originally developed as a TV series for Disney+, picks up three years after the events of the first movie, with Moana proving she is more fearless than ever as she answers an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors and sets out on an expansive new voyage across the far seas. The titular heroine isn’t alone in her journey, as she is once again joined by her self-assured sidekick Maui, as well as a crew of unlikely seafarers who help her to navigate dangerous waters and attempt to find the way to the lost island of Motufetu.
The ‘Moana’ Franchise Is Unclear on How Far It’ll Go
The Moana franchise began with the 2016 animated film and has become a major success for Disney, so a third installment in the animated series feels almost inevitable at this point (especially after the sequel’s post-credits teaser), but no official announcement about the continuation of the story has been made as yet. Moana 2 co-director Dana Ledoux Miller has, however, shared her optimism for the franchise and its possible expansion, as she admitted that “there’s a lot of love for Moana,” so “who knows what else is next” regarding the future.
The recent success of Moana 2 certainly proves that there is an audience for more movies, which is a good sign for Disney, as the studio has the live-action remake adaptation of Moana coming up next year. That movie will see Catherine Laga’aia replace Cravalho as the eponymous heroine alongside Dwayne Johnson, who will reprise his role as Maui, though it seems that he will be wearing a muscle suit to fill out the character’s enormous form — an eyebrow-raising decision that has not gone down too well with fans.
The real-life version of “Moana” is set to hit theaters on July 10, 2026, but you can already watch both “Moana” and “Moana 2” on Disney+ streaming service.
