‘Moana 2’ Delivers Huge Second Weekend; Leaps into Top 5 Movies of the Year

As a long-time Disney enthusiast who has witnessed the magical journey of Moana since her debut in 2016, I must say that Moana 2‘s box office performance is nothing short of breathtaking! Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson have once again brought life to these beloved characters, and it’s truly heartwarming to see their story continue to resonate with audiences worldwide.

For the second consecutive weekend, Moana 2 distinguished itself from other films, topping the box office charts once more. According to The Numbers, it grossed an estimated $52 million domestically in its second week. Despite a significant drop of 63% from its opening weekend, the duo of Auliʻi Cravalho and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (as Moana and Maui) maintained their position at the top. In just 12 days since its release, Moana 2 surpassed the $600-million mark globally.

2024 Box Office Numbers (Worldwide)

  1. Inside Out 2 ($1.7 billion)
  2. Deadpool & Wolverine ($1.3 billion)
  3. Despicable Me 4 ($969.1 million)
  4. Dune: Part Two ($714.4 million)
  5. Moana 2 ($600 million)

The film adaptation of the Broadway musical “Wicked,” earning $34.9 million, maintained its enchanting streak at the second spot this weekend domestically. Although it hasn’t been as successful overseas ($135 million), the movie’s strong box office in the U.S. and Canada ($320.5 million) has almost propelled the musical featuring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande towards the half-billion-dollar mark, raking in a global total of $455.6 million within only three weekends since its release.

‘Interstellar’ Re-Release Is Out of This World

In the Top 5 films this week, Gladiator II came in third place, trailing behind Moana 2 and Wicked. The sequel to the original Gladiator from 2000 grossed an additional $12.5 million domestically, bringing its total to $132.7 million. However, Ridley Scott and Denzel Washington’s film continued to draw large crowds overseas, with Gladiator II earning a staggering $235.7 million internationally for a global total of $368.4 million.

At position number 4, “Red One” reported earnings of $7 million, and the re-release of Christopher Nolan’s movie “Interstellar,” shown in IMAX, completed the Top 5 with a strong $4.4 million. Despite several dozen new films debuting in cinemas during the weekend, the science fiction drama led by Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, celebrating its 10th anniversary, outshone all fresh releases.

Over the weekend, four newly released titles (including “Solo Leveling – ReAwakening” at No. 6, “Y2K” at No. 7, “For King + Country: A Drummer Boy Christmas” at No. 8, and “Werewolves” at No. 10) all made it into the Top 10 list. However, none of these new releases managed to break into the Top 5 due to their relatively small audiences. Nolan’s “Interstellar” had the highest per-theater average ($26,818), significantly outperforming “Moana 2” with a theater average of $12,381.

On the other hand, “Moana 2” broke a record during the weekend following Thanksgiving, with all films earning a total of $126.4 million. The previous record, set in 2018 with “Ralph Breaks the Internet,” “The Grinch,” “Creed II,” and “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald,” brought in $119.7 million.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that Sony’s upcoming Spidey spin-off, Kraven the Hunter, is set to grace our screens starting December 13, accompanied by the animated masterpiece, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. Predictions for the opening weekend box office of Kraven hint at a potential earning range of $20 million to $25 million (according to Boxoffice Pro). Meanwhile, TLOR is aiming for a modest start of $10 million and a high end of $25 million.
