As a seasoned gamer who has spent countless hours immersed in various digital worlds, I must admit that stepping into the cinematic universe feels like a refreshing change of pace. The sheer scale and spectacle of Disney’s Moana 2 is nothing short of breathtaking, and its record-breaking box office debut is a testament to the power of storytelling and the enduring appeal of animation.
Disney’s Moana 2 has taken a the crown with a Thanksgiving box office record.
In its debut during a five-day holiday period, the Polynesian animated movie raked in an impressive $221 million USD, breaking previous records. This new record surpasses the initial earnings of 2019’s Frozen II ($125 million USD) and 2013’s Hunger Games: Catching Fire ($109 million USD). It now holds the title for the largest five-day debut ever, even outdoing Universal’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023. Additionally, this impressive start sets a new best mark for Walt Disney Animation’s initial releases. The sequel significantly exceeded early predictions of earnings between $135 million to $145 million USD.
Disney Entertainment’s co-chairman, Alan Bergman, expressed joy and gratitude in a statement, “We’re thrilled to be celebrating this achievement, and we appreciate the support from cinema-goers and fans who contributed to our record-breaking opening.” The animated film faced competition from Universal’s version of Wicked and Paramount’s action sequel Gladiator II. These three high-budget blockbusters collectively grossed an estimated $422 million USD over the Thanksgiving weekend. Wicked took the second spot at the box office, earning $117.5 million USD during the five-day holiday period.
