As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours immersed in Disney films and their intricate narratives, I must say that the expansion of the definition of a Disney Princess is both refreshing and inspiring. Growing up, I always admired the strong-willed heroines in these stories, but it’s heartening to see the evolution towards characters like Moana, who are not just princesses by name or title, but by their actions and spirit.
Why do we call someone a “princess” like Moana, and who earns the title of a Disney Princess? That’s an intriguing question, but the answer can vary depending on who you ask. For instance, Auli’i Cravalho, the star of both Moana and its upcoming sequel, wouldn’t consider her character a princess, even if she is considered one from the perspective of Disney Princess merchandising.
In a recent chat with Entertainment Weekly, the actress clarified a question many Disney enthusiasts have been pondering: is Moana considered a princess? Technically speaking, she isn’t – being the daughter of a village chief and navigator instead. However, Disney has chosen to include her in their roster of official princesses, possibly because they are broadening their definition of what constitutes a Disney Princess.
In Cravalho’s words, “Films reflect the era they come from.” In today’s world, we yearn for a protagonist who is a young woman taking charge of her own narrative. Thus, while she may be a princess, she is also a hero. I appreciate how the terms ‘princess’ and ‘hero’ are becoming synonymous now.
In one scene of the latest movie, her character asserts that she’s not actually a princess. Maui, played by Dwayne Johnson, then responds, “Many believe you are.” Nevertheless, Cravalho mentions that Moana likely won’t be seen in a gown anytime soon, but she’s okay with that. She explains that it’s important to remember that various types of girls contribute to the world – not just those who look graceful in grand, frilly dresses (though fancy, frilly dresses can certainly be fun sometimes!).
As a passionate fan, I firmly believe that it’s crucial for characters to embark on their unique journey of self-discovery, not just in search of romantic interests or the love of their lives. And let me tell you, Moana is an absolutely intriguing character who shines brilliantly on her own. She doesn’t need anyone else!
What Is ‘Moana 2’ About And Who Is In The Cast?
Three years after the events of the initial film, Moana 2 follows our protagonist answering the ocean’s call and her ancestors’ guidance to unite the inhabitants of Oceania’s islands, aiming to lift a perplexing enchantment. Along this journey, Moana is joined once more by her old companion Maui, as well as characters from the first film reprising their roles. Joining them are returning stars Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, along with Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, and Alan Tudyk. In addition to this stellar cast, newcomers Khaleesi Lambert-Tsuda, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Hualālai Chung, Awhimai Fraser, and Gerald Ramsey are joining the production.
Notably, Johnson’s daughters, Jasmine and Tiana, lend their voices to characters within Moana’s fan club, a delightful touch that’s hard to resist gushing over. Given that Johnson’s daughter, Tiana, initially found it difficult to accept her father as the voice behind Maui in her beloved film, this endearing instance of nepotism-fueled casting is something we wholeheartedly endorse.
The sequel to “Moana” is scheduled to hit cinemas on November 27, 2024. Alongside “Wicked”, these two highly anticipated movies with strong female leads are expected to deliver remarkable box office results. It’s clear that these films, destined for success, will continue to rescue studios financially (waving at Barbie!). I can’t help but wonder if there won’t be any valuable lessons learned from this experience…although I always enjoy being surprised! (Just putting it out there, I’m a fan of being disproven.)
