As a die-hard fan of Disney animations, I must say that Moana 2 has been an exhilarating rollercoaster ride for its creators! The sudden shift from a TV series to a feature film not only brought about a fresh perspective but also imposed an incredible challenge – completing the movie in just five months.
In a different scenario, Disney’s upcoming film, Moana 2, might not be at the top spot in the country if it had initially been released as intended. Originally conceived as a TV series for Disney+, this popular sequel underwent a significant transformation when it was moved to the big screen. Composer Mark Mancina is now discussing how this sudden change drastically altered the storylines of Moana, Maui, Heihei, and all inhabitants of Motunui.
Discussing Moana 2 with Screen Rant, director Ron Clements shared an interesting detail: the storyline for Moana wasn’t the initial plan for her journey this time. With alterations happening and Disney President Alan Bergman announcing a shift to a feature film in January, Clements and his team had a tight deadline to finish the movie.
The series contained elements similar to [Motufetu], but not for the same reasons. Since it was a multi-episode series, they had ample time to focus on characters and entertainment instead of rushing through the main plot. However, I feel that the main storyline may have been weak or non-existent. We didn’t get to watch many episodes; we only saw one or two, with part three being seemingly combined into a single, less polished segment.
A year ago, when they decided to turn it into a film, I expected we’d have a script ready within a few weeks followed by production. However, it wasn’t until May that we got the green light. We were left with just five months to complete the project, making for a very tight timeline.
‘Moana 2’ Cut Several Songs Once It Made the Jump to the Big Screen
Among the delightful features of Disney films is their abundance of musical sequences, and just like its predecessor, Moana 2 doesn’t shy away from this tradition. From the opening tune “We’re Back,” to the catchy “Can I Get a Chee Hoo?”, there are plenty of tunes that make you tap your feet. If it had been a series instead, we would have enjoyed even more musical numbers. Unfortunately, when the storyline underwent changes, several of those songs were removed from the final version. As composer Lin-Manuel Miranda shared with Screen Rant, at least “two or three” songs ended up being cut during post-production.
Originally, among the songs we created at the start, only the first one, titled ‘We’re Back,’ made it through. We also worked on two or three additional songs, one named ‘Goat’ and another called ‘Two Pieces of Me.’ These songs were quite impressive, but they no longer aligned with our storyline. Although we came very close to completing them, they didn’t make the final cut. It’s possible that these unused songs might be shared on a future release at some point.
Given the abbreviated length of the movie versus a ten-episode series, it’s logical. However, we can only cross our fingers that Mancina’s words prove true, and we might get to listen to those tunes at some point, either as bonus tracks or perhaps in the short films Disney occasionally releases. For now, you can catch Moana 2 currently playing in cinemas nationwide.
