Warning: Major spoilers ahead for MobLand episode 9
In the penultimate episode of Ronan Bennett’s series MobLand, signs hinted at the possible downfall of the Harrigan crime family. Deceit and treachery peaked, potentially marking the beginning of their end. The second request Harry made to the enigmatic Kat McAllister was fulfilled, leading Conrad to confront cartel leader Jaime Lopez. True to form, the Harrigan patriarch antagonized him. However, a deal could progress only if Harry manages to uncover and eliminate the traitor hidden within his family.
In the negotiations, Kevin was noticeably missing because he chose instead to confront his ex-imprisoner and tormentor, Rusby. Meanwhile, his wife discreetly left the Harrigan estate to pursue her secretive schemes. Later, Alice, Jan’s friend who now works for Colin Tattersall following the deaths of Fisk and Mukasa (episode 8), arrived at the manor at Conrad’s invitation for dinner. However, the dinner was abruptly disrupted by a swift-moving tactical team with air support, leading to Conrad and Maeve being apprehended. The meal had exploded in chaos due to a significant revelation.
What Conrad & Maeve Are Arrested For At The End Of MobLand Season 1, Episode 9
Their Murderous Ways Finally Caught Up To Them
Alice was discreetly taken by Tattersall to Conrad’s estate, equipped with a listening device hidden in her phone instead of an overt wire, due to its potential risk to her safety since it could be easily detected. Despite the short duration of her visit, she didn’t manage to extract a confession or any definitive proof of wrongdoing from Conrad. Her objective, however, was never about securing a confession; instead, she aimed to gather DNA samples from either Conrad or Maeve, or both if feasible, to strengthen the case against them and eventually secure their convictions. In truth, they were detained on “suspicion of murder,” implying that the police lacked solid evidence at that point.
Alice’s Plan To Plant DNA Of Conrad & Maeve Explained
The Police Informant Had Experience Putting Criminals Away
In essence, the ultimate goal shared by Alice (also known as Nicola) and Tattersall was to fabricate proof that would ensure the permanent imprisonment of Conrad and Maeve. It became clear that Tattersall acknowledged Alice’s history of accepting money to plant DNA evidence, potentially implicating individuals who may or may not have been guilty of crimes. This suggests that both Alice/Nicola and Tattersall are willing to manipulate the legal system in order to secure convictions, which forms the basis of their plan for the Harrigans: first, arrest them, then produce false evidence to keep them incarcerated.

The intriguing aspect of this plan is that Tattersall is in cahoots with Richie Stevenson, who is the one manipulating events behind the scenes. He harbors no desire to see Conrad and Maeve languish in prison; instead, he intends for Colin to put them in some form of detention so that he can then execute them himself. With the blood of his son and wife potentially on Conrad and Maeve’s hands, Richie is eager to team up with a crooked investigator like Tattersall to carry out his vengeance once and for all.
What The Song Conrad & Maeve Sing In MobLand Season 1, Episode 9’s Ending Is
The Irish Folk Ballad Rings Of Freedom And Independence
As they’re forcibly evacuated from their residence, Maeve exuberantly bursts into a tune, and Conrad follows suit shortly after. The melody they harmoniously perform while being placed in patrol cars is an ancient Irish ballad called “Twenty Men From Dublin”, penned by Arthur Griffith during the early 1900s. This song symbolizes the Irish guerrilla fighters who opposed the British Crown during the Irish Rebellion of 1798, serving as a battle hymn in Ireland, which Maeve and Conrad would have been familiar with growing up. For them, it represents a strong-willed protest against the police.
What Was Going On With Seraphina At The Dinner?
She Was As Combative As We’ve Ever Seen Her
After overcoming her challenging interaction with Jaime Lopez, Seraphina effectively assumes a key role next to her father at dinner. Initially, Conrad invited Alice to dinner due to suspicions about her motives; in fact, Maeve earlier questioned him if he thought Alice was an informant during their sauna session within the episode. Yet, instead of Conrad interrogating Alice to uncover more about her intentions, it’s Seraphina who does so, showcasing her unwavering loyalty towards her father, whom she holds dearest among all his children.
Why Did Maeve Tell The Police About Archie?
The Harrigan Matriarch Is A True Agent Of Chaos
In the first season of MobLand, Maeve’s true goal has been unclear for much of the time, but now it appears that the show is intentionally keeping this a secret. It seems that Maeve might not have a clear objective beyond causing chaos and making it land at Conrad’s feet. She’s doing everything in her power to undermine his position and destabilize him in general, as she hinted at during their tense confrontation before they were arrested. In essence, she confessed that she told the police about Archie because she knew it would put more pressure on Conrad.
Who Is The Rat That Harry Has Found?
It Hasn’t Been Totally Confirmed, But Now It Seems Obvious
In episode 8, Harry takes Freddie out after discovering the true identity of Richie Stevenson’s informant within Harrigan’s criminal group. Although it wasn’t explicitly stated in episode 9, it was heavily implied through context. Following Harry’s discovery that a deal with Jaime Lopez would go through if the informant in the Harrigan household was eliminated, Harry promptly contacts O’Hara Delaney, the Harrigans’ attorney (Lisa Dwan). When Seraphina questions him about his actions, he responds that he is “taking care of something urgently.
It almost certainly means that she was indeed working with Richie, and Harry appears to have merely been confirming what Freddie had told him. Harry then invites O’Hara for a discussion in the morning, suggesting it’s likely that O’Hara will not miss this meeting if she attends.
What To Expect From MobLand’s Finale
There Are A Ton Of Threads To Wrap Up Or Progress
By the end of episode 9, there are numerous loose ends that leave little room for resolution in just one final episode. It appears the strategy is for MobLand to extend its story beyond this season, potentially even into multiple seasons. However, coordinating schedules with such a high-profile cast could prove challenging. Yet, given the show’s meteoric success on streaming platforms, the likelihood of another season seems almost certain. At minimum, the season finale should tie up some crucial plot threads, most notably the fate of Conrad and Maeve.
Harry additionally has an appointment with Kat, likely concerning the initial favor he owes her. It appears that Bella’s strategy involving a Syrian weapons dealer, the Home Secretary, her father, and Antoine might be unveiled, which could potentially turn out badly for her given Harry’s repeated warnings about her participation. It’s possible that Jan will reach her limit following the armed police raid she and her daughter experienced due to her husband’s occupation. The climax of MobLand is sure to be dramatic, and it seems reasonable to anticipate a high number of casualties.
