MobLand’s Paul: Why Maeve Had Him Do ?! You Won’t Believe It!

As a devoted fan of MobLand, I can’t help but express my shock over the game-changing events that unfolded in episode 5. The seemingly peaceful funeral and wake of Tommy Stevenson was merely a prelude to the eruption of violence between the Harrigans and Stevensons.

The catalyst for this bloodshed was the cold-blooded murder of Vron Stevenson, wife of Richie Stevenson and mother to the late Tommy. A bomb cleverly concealed in her car detonated upon ignition, tragically taking her life as she went about her ordinary day of shopping. This heinous act, committed by Paul Harrigan’s trusted right-hand man, has undeniably marked a significant turning point in the first season of MobLand.

In contrast to the unsolved case of Tommy Stevenson’s murder, there seems little doubt about who orchestrated Vron’s death. At Tommy’s funeral, the distraught mother openly expressed her anger towards Maeve Harrigan, humiliating her in front of others. This led to a heated phone call from Maeve, furious over the disrespect shown. It appeared that Maeve was arranging Vron’s murder through this call, but interestingly, she did not reach out to Harry Da Souza, the Harrigan family’s go-between. Instead, she contacted Paul, a less prominent figure in the crime family’s circle.

Paul Is A Member Of The Harrigans’ Security

The Bearded Henchman Is Capable And Intelligent

Paul (Emmett J. Scanlan) is a henchman who typically operates behind the scenes following significant events orchestrated by the Harrigans. For instance, he was involved in cleaning up the Cotswolds’ sitting room after Archie’s murder, executing Harry’s instructions regarding supplies. Yet, it’s worth mentioning that Paul doesn’t seem to report directly to Harry in the same way Zosia and Kiko do.

He is a faithful associate of both Conrad and Maeve, and seems to be one of the more reliable individuals within the Harrigans’ close-knit group. Although he doesn’t possess the same degree of access to the family’s affairs as Harry, Conrad’s right hand, Paul is considered trustworthy enough to aid in the less savory activities that Maeve and Conrad are involved with. He has been observed patiently waiting on the stairs for instructions when Conrad and Maeve are deliberating over who might have betrayed them by revealing Archie’s body location to the police, and they trust him enough to carry out a delicate assignment.

Why Maeve Has Paul Kill Vron Stevenson

She Wants A War, But Can’t Use Harry

In episode 4 of “MobLand”, it becomes clear to Conrad and Maeve that only Conrad and Harry know where Archie’s body is hidden. Therefore, if an anonymous tip about the body’s location was given to the police (and it wasn’t from Conrad), it must have been Harry or someone he confided in. To investigate this, Conrad tasks Paul with following Harry’s wife, Jan, to learn her destination. This is a task that Conrad couldn’t ask of Harry directly, so the fact that he entrusts Paul with it underscores the high level of confidence and trust between Paul and the leaders of the Harrigan family.

It’s also plausible that Maeve opted to enlist Paul over Harry for the bombing task. Primarily, she harbors no confidence in Harry whatsoever. More importantly, she wishes to instigate a conflict with the Stevensons, and planting a bomb on Vron’s car serves as the catalyst for that war. Given Harry’s relentless efforts to prevent such a conflict, it was logical for her to select someone who would unquestioningly obey her commands, regardless of the potential repercussions – in this case, Paul.

Throughout the initial five episodes of MobLand, signs suggest that the Harrigan family is being cornered, a fact not lost on Harry. His marital troubles hint that he might soon abandon his fixer role within the family, if he hasn’t already begun to do so. Paul appears to be an ideal candidate for this position (as perceived by Maeve and Conrad) due to his reliability and competence. A confrontation between Harry and Paul seems imminent, potentially in future episodes.
