What sets FromSoft games apart isn’t just the meticulously designed boss battles, the intricate storylines, or the somber tales of their villains. It’s the unique experience of being able to scribble messages like ‘Don’t give up, skeleton’ and ‘Try finger in hole’ all over the game, connecting players worldwide through shared struggle.
It’s becoming more possible for every game to include the feature where players can exchange messages, like in Dark Souls. This is thanks to creative modders, and one such example is the Ghosts of Tamriel mod for Oblivion Remastered. (Source: VG247)
The mod originates from creators yamashi and jay-jay, enabling you to post messages anywhere within Cyrodiil for other users (provided they also have the mod) to view by simply pressing CTRL on your keyboard. These messages appear as floating Welkynd Stones – the luminescent blue stones used for recharging mana found in Ayleid ruins. Unlike FromSoft’s set of predefined phrases that players often twist into crude language, these floating stones offer a more adaptable method of communication.
To put it simply, this platform is both thrilling and risky because it’s extremely open. It functions as a plain text document that you can name and fill with whatever content you desire. However, the potential for a distressing experience becomes evident when you consider the upvoting and downvoting system, which allows users to control the visibility of content they find undesirable. Messages last only 24 hours before disappearing permanently, but they can be extended by receiving an upvote. Conversely, messages that receive too many downvotes will be removed from the system. There’s also an option to hide messages you don’t wish to see in your personal space.
This modification necessitates an internet connection and displays your character’s name along with your messages, but beyond that, it maintains a delightfully anonymous atmosphere reminiscent of early internet days. Given its remaster from 2006, this anonymity is fitting. As the creators explain, “No data sent to the server is stored,” they say, “it remains in memory only for the duration of the message, after which it vanishes permanently.
If you’re eager to spread your cleverness and insights throughout the vast Oblivion community, here’s what you can do: Head on over to Nexus, set up the Oblivion Remastered Script Extender first, then use a mod manager to install Ghosts of Tamriel. After that, you’re good to go!
