A comprehensive guide covering all aspects of the Antivirus skill in Monster Hunter Wilds, such as its role, influence on character builds, and other relevant details.
Monster Hunter Wilds features some really cool new skills and Decorations, which allow you to become incredibly overpowered, albeit in the endgame. However, much like many of its endgame features, the game seldom explains the actual impact these new skills will have on your build, should you choose to use them.
Skills like Flayer do have a straightforward explanation, i.e., making it easy to create wounds on monsters. However, there are certain skills that either don’t work as advertised (a la Maximum Might) or aren’t explained properly. The latter holds true for what is easily the most overpowered skill in the game right now – Antivirus.
But what is Antivirus, and how does it affect a build’s combat (or defensive) efficiency? Well, to help you properly understand the skill, here’s a comprehensive guide on Antivirus and how to best use it in Monster Hunter Wilds.
What Is the Antivirus Skill in Monster Hunter Wilds?
The Antivirus skill essentially makes it easier to overcome the effects of the Frenzy virus. At a cursory glance, you might think it’s a skill that’s very situational and only effective for builds that are specifically made to fight Gore Magala or Tempered Gore Magala. Although you won’t be completely wrong to think so, it’s far from the whole truth. Antivirus is also incredibly effective, even if you don’t plan to fight Gore Magala. Unlike most skills in the game, Antivirus comes with multiple perks, which complement one another. Essentially, Antivirus speeds up the process of Frenzy recovery. And once you’re fully recovered from Frenzy, it grants additional Affinity for a full minute.
With Antivirus Level 3, you can essentially get a 15% Affinity bonus every time you recover from Frenzy. While 15% might not look like much, it’s a lot if your base Affinity is already above 25%. With the additional 15%, you’ll hit the 40% threshold, which translates to roughly double the base DPS on every Critical Hit. However, the skill comes with a major caveat, i.e., having to get afflicted with Frenzy. After all, you can’t carry a “pocket version” of Gore Magala with you everywhere to periodically inflict you with Frenzy.
However, there’s an armor set (pieces) that does just that, i.e., periodically inflicts you with Frenzy. Here’s everything you need to know about how to use Antivirus in your build.
How To Use Antivirus Skill?
The Antivirus skill is effective only if you equip a very specific armor set or at least two pieces of it. This is the Gore Magala set, which comes with the Black Eclipse set bonus (2 pieces). Black Eclipse activates every time you face off against a Large Monster and inflicts you with Frenzy.
To get the Black Eclipse skill, you need to equip the Gore Magala Coil and the Gore Magala Greaves. You can go with either the Alpha or the Beta versions of the armor. However, we recommend using the Beta version to get access to more and better Decoration slots. With two pieces of the Gore Magala set equipped, you’ll get afflicted with the Frenzy every time you set out on a hunt.
However, with Antivirus (preferably at Level 3), you will recover fairly quickly and retain the Affinity bonus. After a set amount of time (roughly 120 seconds), you will get afflicted by Frenzy again, and the cycle will repeat until the Monster either flees or is slain. You can also use the Sane Jewels to increase the level of Antivirus.
