‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ Trailer Hints at Sexual Abuse Claims by Brothers

As a seasoned gamer and true-crime enthusiast who has spent countless hours dissecting cases like this on various immersive crime simulation games, I must admit that the upcoming second season of Monster on Netflix piques my interest. The Menendez brothers’ story is one that has captivated audiences for decades, and the latest adaptation promises to delve deeper into the complexities of the case, exploring themes of abuse, family dynamics, and the nature of justice itself.

The initial teaser for the second season of Netflix’s and Ryan Murphy’s series titled Monster delves into allegations made by actual brothers Lyle and Eric Menendez, who assert that they endured years of sexual abuse from their father, José Menendez.

The intro for “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story” starts off with a family photo session, where Kitty Menendez, portrayed by Chloë Sevigny, subtly inquires of her husband José (Javier Bardem), “Can you tell me what’s been going on between you and the boys?”

In the backdrop of the picture session, fresh faces Nicholas Alexander Chavez (as Lyle) and Cooper Koch (as Erik), flank their parents with warm grins on their faces, while the parents appear deep in thought. “It’s done. Stop. I’m going to mend this family,” José says firmly before he and his spouse decide to depart from the scene.

Back in 1993, when I stood trial for the tragic murder of my parents, José and Kitty Menendez, I asserted that I acted in self-defense, having endured years of sexual abuse from my father, a secret my mother was aware of. The trailer concludes with my brother and me sharing an emotional bond.

“It’s just us now,” one of the brothers tells the other.

In the second series of “Monsters,” the plot summary goes like this: “While one side asserted it was about inheriting their family wealth, the brothers maintain to this day, even while serving life sentences with no chance of parole, that their actions were driven by a lifetime of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse inflicted upon them by their parents. The series, titled “Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story,” delves into the sensational case that shook the world, sparked the current craze for true crime stories, and ultimately poses the question to its viewers: Who are the genuine monsters?”

In the second season, you’ll find Nathan Lane portraying investigative journalist Dominick Dunne, while Ari Graynor takes on the character of criminal defense attorney Leslie Abramson. The Menendez case, a major media event in the early ’90s, is once again brought to life on screen through the series Monsters.

1994 saw Fox and CBS airing TV films based on the murders, while Lifetime broadcast “Menendez: Blood Brothers” in 2017 and NBC’s “Law & Order: True Crime” delved into the case with Edie Falco portraying Abramson. In 2023, Peacock premiered a documentary titled “Menendez + Menudo: Boys Betrayed“, which included Roy Rosselló, a former member of boy band Menudo, alleging that José Menendez sexually assaulted him during his teenage years.
