More Cowbell

Throughout its half-century existence, “Saturday Night Live” (SNL) has left an indelible mark on popular culture through numerous side-splitting, iconic skits. Sketches such as “Porn Teacher” starring Amy Schumer, “Black Jeopardy with Tom Hanks”, the debated “Harry Potter: Hermione Growth Spurt” featuring Lindsay Lohan, and Adam Driver’s exceptional “Star Wars Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base” are among the audience favorites. However, if there is one skit that has become ingrained in fans’ memories more than any other, it is undoubtedly the memorable “More Cowbell” sketch starring Will Ferrell and Christopher Walken. A forthcoming docuseries, titled “SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night”, will delve into the show’s rich history, dedicating an entire episode to this beloved skit.

“I can hardly believe it when I heard you’re creating a documentary around the cowbell sketch,” Jimmy Fallon shared with Deadline during an interview regarding the new docuseries. “It’s the most epic sketch I’ve ever participated in.”

SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night is set to premiere today (January 16) on Peacock, airing over four episodes that will be released weekly. The “More Cowbell” sketch has become one of the most iconic SNL skits ever, with its fame being so immense it allegedly impacted Christopher Walken’s life, as mentioned by Will Ferrell.

In this drawing, Ferrell portrays Gene Frenkle, the cowbell player, while Walken takes on the role of music producer Bruce Dickinson, albeit with his unique speech. Jimmy Fallon, Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz, Chris Kattan, Dave Grohl, and Josh Homme depict the remaining members of Blue Öyster Cult. In the studio recording session for “Don’t Fear the Reaper,” Walken frequently interrupted the band, insisting that they needed more cowbell. As the saying goes, “The only remedy for my illness is more cowbell!

‘Saturday Night Live’ Celebrates 50 Years

On October 11, 1975, NBC aired the first episode ever of Saturday Night Live. This debut show was hosted by George Carlin, featuring a group that included Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtin, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Gilda Radner, and Laraine Newman as cast members. Since then, over four decades have passed, and Saturday Night Live has continued to thrive without showing any signs of stopping in the near future.

In the documentary titled “SNL 50: Beyond Saturday Night“, additional episodes delve into the process of auditioning for the show, the inner workings of its writing room, and Season 11, a period where the series was widely speculated to be terminated. As stated by executive producer Morgan Neville during an interview, “They’ve shared their tale previously, but as a comedy enthusiast, I thought, ‘What I crave as a spectator is not another account of SNL‘s history, but distinct narratives that can delve deeper into the hidden corners and aspects we rarely get to discuss.’

The 2024 movie named Saturday Night recounted and dramatized the origin of Saturday Night Live. In this film, Rachel Sennott, Gabriel LaBelle, Ella Hunt, Cory Michael Smith, Kaia Jordan Gerber, and Lamorne Morris portrayed the initial cast. The story unfolds around the turmoil that occurred during the show’s debut on NBC.
