Last year, the Marvel universe dared to explore R-rated content with Deadpool and Wolverine. These movies raked in a staggering $1.3 billion at the box office, leading Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige to announce that more R-rated productions are in development.
What did Kevin Feige say about the future of R-rated movies in the MCU?
In a recent gathering, Feige announced that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) will produce more movies rated R, due to the commercial triumph of Deadpool and Wolverine. However, he emphasized that an MCU film will only receive an R-rating when it’s fitting and necessary, suggesting that not every project will automatically earn this mature rating.
Feige once again made clear that R-rated characters such as Deadpool could show up in PG-13 movies, using the example of Green Goblin who can construct snowmen on Disney+’s Spider-Man series and kill Aunt May in Spider-Man: No Way Home. In the upcoming movie, Spider-Man: A Fresh Start, fans will witness this blend as Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher is confirmed to appear. Feige subtly hinted that when The Punisher appears in the Spider-Man film, it will have a different mood.
As a dedicated Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) fan, I’ve always admired the gritty portrayal of The Punisher. So far, his appearances have been confined to projects that carry a TV-MA rating, much like an R-rated movie in theatres. It seems that this trend will continue with his upcoming roles in “Daredevil: Born Again Season 2” and the yet-to-be-titled Punisher special. The latter commenced filming last week and is slated to premiere on Disney+ in 2026.
Feige remained silent about the potential appearance of the next R-rated MCU film, but it’s been reported that Ryan Reynolds is developing a fourth Deadpool movie. Previously, in May, it was revealed that Reynolds is penning an X-Men team-up film, characterized as “X-Force-esque,” where Deadpool would play a supporting character rather than the main protagonist.
It’s reported that Josh Brolin as Cable, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, and Storm are part of this team, but it’s undecided if Halle Berry will return to her role. Ryan Reynolds is independently producing this project, separate from Marvel Studios’ ongoing X-Men revamp within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Deadpool & Wolverine is available to stream on Disney+.
