Morgan Lofting, the Baroness in ‘G.I. Joe’ Animated Series, Dies at 84

As a dedicated fan who grew up with the iconic characters from my childhood, I am deeply saddened by the passing of Morgan Lofting. Her voice and portrayal of the Baroness in the G.I. Joe series was nothing short of extraordinary. The dark-haired, glasses-wearing, leather-clad villain will forever remain etched in my memory, a symbol of the fierce women who graced our screens during those formative years.

Morgan Lofting, a well-established voice actress famed for her role as the Baroness in the G.I. Joe animated series and films, passed away at the age of 84. Known for her portrayal of the ruthless Cobra chief intelligence officer who disrupted peace in the series, she is no longer with us.

On Wednesday, Lofting tragically passed away unexpectedly at her residence in Burbank. Her representatives, Nery Lemus and Christopher Arsaga from CelebWorx, made this announcement. In a statement, they shared, “She was one of the original 10 actors at our agency, and she held immense value to us and our organization.

This actress lent her voice to characters such as Aunt May and Black Cat in a Spider-Man series from 1981-82, and Moonracer and Firestar for a Transformers series in 1985. Additionally, she provided voiceovers for the Arnold Schwarzenegger film Total Recall, which was released in 1990.

In a European manner, Lofting created the Baroness, a seductive mistress of disguise with a knack for weaponry and close-combat, donning black-framed spectacles and a snug black leather ensemble.

She played the role of the terrorist character in the G.I. Joe miniseries from 1983, 1984, and 1989; for four seasons across two series that were aired from 1985-86 and 1990-91; in the TV movie G.I. Joe: Arise, Serpentor, Arise! (1986); and in the direct-to-video film G.I. Joe: The Movie (1987).

In a 2017 interview, she reminisced about an amusing incident with her co-star Mike Bell. He playfully commented that there seemed to be “blood on the control room window” after she would exclaim “Cobraaaa!” during filming.

During that chat, she expressed amazement that the shows she worked on years ago still resonated.

After spending your money and returning home, three decades pass before someone greets you with, ‘I’d like you to meet my partner and kids.’ They explain how significant you were in their formative years. It dawns on you then that these fictional characters have a profound impact on people’s lives.

Lofting, who was born on February 2, 1940, in Cincinnati, made appearances in four episodes of the CBS primetime soap ‘Knots Landing’ between 1986 and 1987. Additionally, Lofting featured in the 1988 film titled ‘The Night Before’, alongside Keanu Reeves and Lori Loughlin.

In the year 1989, she resumed her studies to obtain her bachelor’s degree and subsequently completed her master’s in History at California State University Northridge. Later on, she discovered a passion for “mixing knowledge with service,” a term she used to describe it, as a librarian.

In 2013, she resumed her career in voice acting, portraying the character of Fistina, a former antagonist, on the series Ben 10: Omniverse.

She is survived by her brother Tim, along with his spouse Lynn and their child Brian; her son Justin and his partner Stacie; and her grandkids Zac and Ellie.
