Despite varying opinions about the previous ‘Mortal Kombat’ film, it still generated enough interest, and now, a follow-up is being produced.
For some time now, it’s been known that Karl Urban, who stars in The Boys, has been cast as the iconic character Johnny Cage. Interestingly, this upcoming movie is expected to reintroduce a few characters from the games who didn’t appear in the initial film.
Every New Character in Mortal Kombat II
In the upcoming movie, Johnny Cage is joining Team Raiden as a new member. Additionally, the story will introduce Kitana, the Outworld Princess played by Adeline Rudoplh. It’s unclear whether she’ll side with good or evil, but Jade, portrayed by Tati Gabrielle, will make her first appearance in MKII.
In this movie, we’ll get to see some new faces, including the long-time series antagonist Shao Khan, portrayed by Martyn Ford, and his queen Sindel, played by Ana Thu Nguyen. We’ll also be introduced to the evil sorcerer Quan Chi, acted by Damon Herriman, and the chaotic neutral character Baraka, brought to life by CJ Bloomfield.
In the upcoming sequel, not only will we see several fresh characters, but also some familiar ones from the original film, along with a few unexpected surprises.
Which Character is Coming Back?

Among them, Jessica McNamee’s character Sonya, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks portraying Jax, and Lewis Tan as Cole are among the EarthRealm warriors who have survived and will be reappearing. Additionally, Tadanobu Asano is set to return as Raiden, and Chin Han will once again play Shang Tsung.
Whoa, can you believe it? Even though Kung Lao (Max Huang) and Kano (Josh Lawson) kicked the bucket in the first flick, they’re making a comeback for the sequel – maybe as some sort of revenants. And here’s the kicker: despite wrapping up their stories in the last movie, Scorpion (Hiroyuki Sanada) and Sub-Zero (Joe Taslim) are set to return too, with Subby stepping back into the role of Noob Saibot for MKII.
It’s a bit disappointing that Mileena won’t reappear in this sequel, given her intriguing past with Kitana, who is set to feature in the film. Could they revive her as a clone at some point in the future? After all, this series isn’t immune to over-the-top plot twists.
The Story
In the upcoming sequel, we’re not entirely sure about the narrative yet, but there’s hope that viewers will finally witness the Mortal Kombat tournament. Unlike the first film where all characters seemed preoccupied with receiving their invitations, it was disappointing to watch the end without a real tournament unfolding.
As a devoted fan, I’m eagerly anticipating the sequel, hoping it’ll finally depict Liu Kang’s destined battle against Shang Tsung. Yet, there’s a chance that the filmmakers might choose to deviate from the traditional mold this time around. After all, even the games have recently undergone a comprehensive reboot of their narrative, so it’s understandable they’d want to mix things up a bit.
Perhaps this time, the movies might fully appreciate the quirky nature of the MK narrative, as while the action was thrilling, some viewers felt it was overly somber. After all, given its roots in campy B-movies, one would expect a more lighthearted tone for this franchise.
Mortal Kombat II is set to hit theaters on Oct. 24.
