As a gamer who has been following the NCIS franchise for nearly two decades, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions seeing Mark Harmon return to the fold with the prequel series, NCIS: Origins. While his “stepback role” might be causing a few ripples behind the scenes, as a fan, I can’t help but feel excited about it.
Following Mark Harmon’s departure from NCIS at the start of Season 19, the actor has since rejoined the franchise for the spin-off series NCIS: Origins, set to air in 2024. In this new role, Harmon is both an executive producer and narrator for the show, which focuses on a young Leroy Jethro Gibbs as he becomes a Naval Investigative Service (NIS) agent at Camp Pendleton in 1991 after the loss of his wife and daughter. Additionally, he briefly reprises his role as Gibbs during the series premiere. Although viewers are thrilled to see Harmon return, it seems not everyone is entirely convinced by this development.
As a fan who’s thrilled to have Harmon back in the NCIS fold after nearly two decades, I must admit, it’s been quite a ride watching him adapt to his “stepback role” on NCIS: Origins. Yet, from the way he’s been digging up secrets left and right, you’d think it’s been much longer than just a few years since he departed. Guess I can’t blame RadarOnline for reporting that he’s acting like a seasoned detective once more!
Despite his previous statement about retirement three years ago, Mark remains deeply involved in the franchise, having influence over aspects ranging from cast selection to storylines. In his role as executive producer, he’s maximizing every opportunity and finding it difficult to step back. He just can’t resist!
Currently, Harmon has made an appearance in just the initial episode of “Origins”. However, given that the series has been renewed for a complete season, it’s quite possible we might see him in additional episodes.
While on “Origins”, Harmon has been providing the cast with guidance and offering Austin Stowell some insightful suggestions for his Gibbs audition. At this point, it’s unclear if he will rejoin “NCIS” again. Despite this uncertainty, the prequel seems to be keeping him quite occupied, even causing a bit of displeasure among some due to excessive interference.
As a follower, I admire how Mark isn’t shy about expressing his views to the upcoming generation. He’s bold enough to issue evaluations and critiques from a distance, which some find valuable wisdom. However, others feel his frequent interventions are becoming tiresome, longing for a bit of respite from his unrelenting guidance.
It’s important to note that these events are just rumors, and there’s no concrete evidence they occur on the set of Origins.
Let’s momentarily set aside the previous topic for now. The show, in its brief run so far, has demonstrated itself as an impressive spin-off. It features both familiar faces and new characters, weaving a unique narrative that hasn’t been explored before. It’s quite engaging to witness this fresh aspect of Gibbs, and it feels like coming full circle to have Harmon associated with this production too.
In addition, one of two upcoming spin-offs for the NCIS series is the prequel. Fans are also eagerly waiting for the soon-to-be-released NCIS: Tony & Ziva series, which can be accessed with a Paramount+ subscription. This show features popular stars Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo, following their iconic characters as they elude capture across Europe.
Generally speaking, despite whispers about Harmon allegedly dominating on set, the NCIS series continues to thrive in strength. Rest assured, as new details emerge about these accusations, we will promptly share any updates with you.
