As a fan who has followed Glen Powell’s career from his early days, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride and admiration for his journey. His small role in The Dark Knight Rises was just the beginning, and it’s fascinating to see how he’s grown and flourished since then. It’s not every day you get to work with the legendary Christopher Nolan, and Powell’s stories about that experience are truly inspiring.
Prior to his starring roles in movies like “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Anyone But You” and “Twisters”, Glen Powell’s first significant film appearance was in 2012’s “The Dark Knight Rises”. If you’re familiar with him, you might recall that he played the minor character of “Trader #1”, whose head was crushed by Tom Hardy’s Bane. However, Powell has since revealed that he had a conversation with director Christopher Nolan, and it seems like a heartwarming interaction.
A little over ten years back, Glen Powell got a chance to be part of a major motion picture (which came several years after his debut in Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, undeniably), namely, The Dark Knight Rises. Here’s what he had to share about that role:
I still vividly recall every moment. The sensation is something I bring with me to each stage I step onto, and it’s a deep respect for being on any set at all. But what I can’t forget is the exhilarating feeling when I walked onto the set of The Dark Knight Rises; everyone in the world seemed to aspire to be there. Despite having a minor role, I had to audition numerous times for it. It was an opportunity to collaborate with the exceptional director, Christopher Nolan. And then, suddenly, Tom Hardy as Bane would enter. The energy was electrifying, almost surreal. That film was one where nothing else mattered in my life; I was simply battling for every inch. Being cast by Christopher Nolan in his movie felt like an affirmation that’s challenging to put into words.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Powell spoke about the vivid memories he still has of working on Christopher Nolan’s movie. As the actor explained, securing a small role in such a large production required significant effort. At that time, it was a significant milestone for him, providing a sense of validation within his career. Later, Powell mentioned that since his rise to fame, he has crossed paths with Christopher Nolan on occasion.
I’ve had discussions with Chris on this topic. Our paths have crossed in various places. I bumped into him while he was giving an outstanding performance as Oppenheimer, and he seems quite pleased to have spotted my potential early. I’m simply incredibly thankful for his initiative.
After appearing in one of the Batman films, Glen Powell’s road to stardom wasn’t straightforward. He landed some impressive roles in films like “The Expendables 3” in 2014 and “Hidden Figures,” but it’s only recently that he has gained widespread recognition. There are even rumors circulating about him being cast in future Batman movies. Last year, while Christopher Nolan was attending various events for the Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer,” Powell had a pleasant encounter with the filmmaker.
It’s heartwarming to know that Nolan acknowledged him and expressed his “pride” in Powell for discovering him before he became a major star. Maybe Powell will land a role in Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film with Matt Damon and Tom Holland? Regardless, it’s fantastic news that the two have reconnected since the end of The Dark Knight Rises, which wrapped up Nolan’s Batman trilogy.
