As a travel enthusiast who has been fortunate enough to traverse the globe, I must say that the subtropical garden paradise nestled on this picturesque island in Switzerland is nothing short of enchanting. The breathtaking panoramas of the Swiss Alps and Lake Maggiore from Cardada and Cimetta are truly awe-inspiring, making one feel like they’ve stepped into a postcard.

As a cinema enthusiast, I can’t help but feel thrilled at the prospect of heading to the enchanting Swiss town nestled in the Italian-speaking region, for the Locarno Film Festival is once again drawing me and fellow art-house aficionados, as well as industry professionals, with its captivating allure.

The diverse schedule for the 77th edition of the fest includes a wealth of indie films to explore and beloved classics to rewatch. Notable film personalities such as Indian superstar Shah Rukh Khan, French actress Mélanie Laurent, producer Stacey Sher (of ‘Erin Brockovich’ fame), and acclaimed director Jane Campion (‘The Piano’ and ‘The Power of the Dog’) are among those being honored. They will mingle with the approximately 16,000 residents of Locarno, which expands to around 56,000 when including surrounding areas.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the latest films, debating film trends, seeking expert advice, or tired of deal-making and socializing, the town still has plenty of attractions for you.

As someone who has visited numerous cities around the world, I must say that Locarno stands out as a unique and enchanting destination that offers a myriad of experiences beyond its renowned film festival. When I wasn’t engrossed in watching movies or attending events, I found myself captivated by the charming streets filled with vibrant cafes, art galleries, and boutiques that showcase local craftsmanship. The picturesque lake setting, with its crystal-clear waters and stunning mountain backdrop, provided a serene escape where I could unwind and enjoy the beautiful views. The warm and welcoming locals made me feel right at home, and their passion for art, culture, and food was truly infectious. Locarno is not just a city to visit for its film festival, but a place that leaves an indelible mark on your heart and soul.

The main square in Locarno, where many eager film enthusiasts gather to watch highly anticipated films during the festival, is affectionately known as Piazza Grande – the pulsating heart of this charming town.

Here, I’m not just here for the games and events; I find myself drawn to it for its convenience too! It’s perfect for those quick shopping sprees, filling up on fuel, or grabbing a hot cuppa or bite to eat.

On Thursdays, the Piazza Grande serves as a bustling weekly market. Additionally, if you’re in Locarno during July, prior to the August film festival, you can experience the annual Moon & Stars festival here. This event features an impressive lineup of 10 open-air concerts that transform the square into a massive stage. Notable artists who have graced this stage include Sting, Bob Dylan, Rita Ora, Jason Derulo, Status Quo, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Christina Aguilera, Joe Cocker, Emeli Sandé, Jamiroquai, and Lenny Kravitz.

Stroll along the promenade, unwind at the Lido, or explore the nearby islands – sounds like a day full of water activities, doesn’t it? Locarno nestles on the northeastern tip of Lake Maggiore, a picturesque body of water that straddles both Switzerland and Italy, contributing to the Mediterranean ambiance of the region.

You’re not just limited to one kind of activity here – you can choose what suits you best, whether it’s a leisurely stroll along the lakefront, or more adventurous pursuits like boating, sailing, standup paddleboarding, and wakeboarding. There’s even the Locarno Lido with indoor and outdoor pools, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, a thermal pool, a play pool, and four water slides.

In Switzerland, it’s all about breathtaking mountain and lake vistas – if you imagine Switzerland without considering its majestic mountains, then you might be missing out on a significant aspect of its charm. Indeed, stunning mountain and lake landscapes are one of the key attractions that make Locarno stand out.

The Cardada cable car carries passengers to great heights where they can savor the scenic vistas, including from a panoramic bridge. Following this, you’ll find a two-person chairlift that takes you to Cimetta, Locarno’s local mountain. You have the freedom to choose activities such as hiking, appreciating the view, visiting the geological observatory in Cimetta which showcases rock samples from the European and African continental plates, or even doing a combination of these options.

“In a nutshell, Switzerland’s tourism site describes the scenic beauty. From the southern Lake Maggiore to the western Valais Alps, home to the Dufourspitze, all are mere minutes away from the charming town of Locarno.”

The Visconti Castle offers a sense of regal opulence, as it was constructed for members of the influential Italian Visconti family who ruled Milan as lords and dukes during the Middle Ages. Originally built by extending an existing fortress dating back to 998, this castle expanded their domain over Lake Maggiore in the 13th century.

Currently, it is home to an archaeological museum boasting a collection of precious vases and intricately crafted glass goblets.

Based on modern studies, it’s thought that the fortification near the castle called Rivellino might have been both planned and constructed by none other than the great artist himself, Leonardo da Vinci.

Art Gallery (for those who seek more than just cinematic art) – If you’re a participant at the Locarno Film Festival, it’s clear that you appreciate the finer aspects of life. And if your artistic preferences extend beyond films, here’s another suggestion for you.

The Casa Rusca Museum, a beautiful art museum, is nestled within a lovingly restored 18th-century aristocratic dwelling that boasts a picturesque courtyard.

The museum often features temporary displays from both Swiss and international artists, and they also provide guided tours when requested.

Sanctuary with an Awe-Inspiring View: This is a church and shrine situated in Orselina, high above Locarno. It’s not only a popular spot for religious pilgrimage but also for modern-day photography enthusiasts and social media users.

As someone who has spent many years visiting various religious sites around the world, I must say that the sanctuary founded by Bartolomeo de Ivrea stands out as one of the most unique and awe-inspiring places I’ve ever had the pleasure of exploring. Having grown up in a predominantly Catholic country myself, I have a deep appreciation for the significance of such sacred spaces, but this particular sanctuary left an indelible impression on me.

“Reaching the sanctuary in Old Town Locarno can be done via two routes starting at the mountain’s base. One is the Chapels Route, featuring the Church of Annunciata and remnants of several chapels, or the Via Crucis path with its stations depicting Jesus Christ’s suffering on his way to crucifixion. For those conscious about their fitness, a funicular train service (Locarno-Orselina) is available near the station, bypassing the 20-minute walk uphill.”
