MSCHF Puts a Mickey Mouse Spin on an Ancient Greek Sculpture

As a seasoned gamer and art enthusiast who’s been around the block more times than I care to remember, let me tell you this: The unveiling of MSCHF’s “Walt Disney and His Sons” is nothing short of a masterstroke. This Brooklyn-based collective never fails to surprise us with their audacious, tongue-in-cheek takes on pop culture icons.

2021 saw me placing an order for a unique artwork from MSCHF, known as the “Famous Mouse” hailing from a renowned Animation Company. At just $100 USD, I got my hands on one of 1,000 redeemable tokens. However, there was a twist – the artwork couldn’t be physically produced until 2024, keeping it purely conceptual. Now, finally, we get to see it in the flesh!

As a gamer, I’m super excited about the recent development! With Mickey Mouse, aka Steamboat Willie, entering the public domain, MSCHF has unveiled “Walt Disney and His Sons,” a real-life twist on the classic “Laocöon and His Sons.” Instead of Laocöon, it’s Walt himself, and instead of the doomed Trojan priest’s sons, we have his most iconic characters.

From the Satan Air Max 97’s to the wildly-viral, Astro Boy-esque Big Red Boots, the Brooklyn-based collectives continue to show their grit, remaining steadfast in their tongue-in-cheek parodies. “MSCHF X Famous Mouse exults in the process by which works enter the cultural consciousness, and eventually become owned by the people at large.”

If you missed out on the token drop in 2021, don’t worry! You can still get a peek into “Walt Disney and His Sons” through MSCHF’s forthcoming book, which is now up for pre-order on the Phaidon Press website.
