In preparation for its independent future following separation from Comcast, the fresh leadership at MSNBC has brought on a crucial addition to strengthen their political news coverage framework.
Sudeep Reddy has been recruited from Politico to join a cable news TV network in establishing its own independent office in Washington D.C., distinct from NBC News. This new bureau will be operated independently, and Reddy, who oversaw 150 journalists as senior managing editor at the trade publication based in Arlington during his eight-year tenure, is set to begin work at MSNBC on June 16.
Sudeep will be reporting directly to Scott Matthews, who recently joined the executive team of MSNBC as SVP of news gathering. In an internal memo, Matthews expressed that Sudeep’s appointment highlights the significance of original and in-depth reporting for MSNBC’s future. His role will involve overseeing our Washington team to ensure we don’t just cover events within Washington but also examine how decisions made there affect people across the nation and globally.
The task of strengthening its political news division lies ahead following Comcast’s split of its cable TV business into a company called Versant, encompassing MSNBC, CNBC, USA Network, Oxygen, E!, Syfy, and the Golf Channel. This newly formed entity, to be managed by NBCU executive Mark Lazarus, claims that its brands reach approximately 70 million homes and generate around $7 billion in annual revenue.
The deadline for that agreement is anticipated towards the end of this year. NBC News, together with their news-gathering assets including programs like the Today show, will remain with Comcast. Moreover, some prominent journalists are being reassigned between NBC News, MSNBC, and CNBC; Steve Kornacki is one such journalist who signed a contract to leave MSNBC and stay within the Comcast network.
MSNBC is expanding its team with around 100 new hires, following the departure of NBC News resources from certain reporting areas. Reddy will manage coverage for Capitol Hill, the White House, State Department, Justice Department, and Supreme Court as part of the executive’s plan to strengthen MSNBC’s D.C. bureau.
With the boundary between traditional cable TV shows and long-form video podcasts becoming increasingly indistinct, MSNBC has expanded its talent pool by recruiting from a fresh group of competitors. For instance, they have appointed Madeleine Haeringer, a former executive at Crooked Media and NBC News, to manage their podcast and audio content.
In a rapidly changing landscape that’s transitioning from traditional to digital media, new products seem crucial for MSNBC. Matthews noted in a staff memo about Reddy, “During his tenure at Politico, he initiated numerous new ventures such as newsletters, podcasts, live events, and digital services; directed the strategy and management of Politico Playbook during the initial Trump administration; and established the newsroom’s first audio team from scratch.
