Mubi Acquires ‘Grand Theft Hamlet’ for U.S., Global Streaming (Exclusive)

As a connoisseur of the avant-garde and a devotee of all things Shakespearean, I am absolutely thrilled about Mubi’s latest acquisition – the audacious and innovative “Grand Theft Hamlet”. Having spent countless hours immersed in the Bard’s works and the digital world of Grand Theft Auto, I can hardly wait to witness this unique blend of high art and low culture.

Film platform Mubi has acquired both U.S. distribution rights and exclusive worldwide streaming rights for the globally acclaimed documentary, “Grand Theft Hamlet,” a unique blend of Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” and the action-packed game “Grand Theft Auto,” created by Pinny Grylls and Sam Crane.

As a captivated admirer, I’d like to share that I follow the story of two jobless performers during last year’s COVID lockdown. In an extraordinary twist, they endeavored to enact the entire play of Hamlet within the virtual realm of Grand Theft Auto. This intriguing documentary, titled Grand Theft Hamlet, made its debut at SXSW this year, taking home the documentary feature jury award. It also garnered praise from The Hollywood Reporter‘s Leslie Felperin, who deemed it an “innovative,” “humorous,” and “often touching” experimental film.

The movie, titled “Grand Theft Hamlet,” will make its debut in the U.K. at the BFI London Film Festival on October 15. After that, it will have a special showing at the BFI IMAX on October 20. Mubi intends to distribute “Grand Theft Hamlet” in early 2025; more information about this release will be shared soon. This film was funded by BFI Doc Society, Park Pictures, Altitude, and Spark Features. Altitude Film Sales is responsible for global sales of the documentary and has struck a deal with Mubi for distribution.

Mubi’s latest purchase is part of a series of acquisitions for art-focused cinemas, as they grow their streaming service by adding a strong lineup of films to be screened in various regions. Recently, the company has dipped its toes in the domestic market with the release of Coralie Fargeat’s body horror drama “The Substance“, starring Demi Moore, which was shown on almost 2,000 screens across the U.S., and has earned close to $10 million so far.

Mubi has secured distribution rights for two exciting films that premiered at the Venice Film Festival: Luca Guadagnino’s movie “Queer” featuring Daniel Craig, in various international territories such as the UK, Canada, Germany, Spain, and India; and Alex Ross Perry’s music documentary “Pavements,” a tribute to the ’90s indie band, across the UK, Germany, France, and Canada, among other regions.

More recent additions to our collection are “Bird” by Andrea Arnold, and “The Girl With the Needle,” a film by Magnus von Horn – both of which were screened at Cannes Film Festival.
