In the upcoming sequel of Cyberpunk 2077, multiplayer appears to be shifting from speculation towards an anticipated development progression.
Although CD Projekt Red has not announced major news just yet, a series of updates, conversations with media, and particularly job postings hint strongly at the direction they’re moving towards.
Since the unveiling of Project Orion (its sequel’s code name) in 2022, it has been steadily gaining momentum. Significant development work began in 2024, and as we move into early 2025, the team is still growing. Over a span of five months from October to February, they have welcomed an additional 57 developers on board, with 20 now dedicated exclusively to working on Orion.
The key lies in the job postings by CDPR. They advertised a Senior Gameplay Programmer position to create systems applicable for both single-player and multiplayer games. Given their previous positions like Lead Network Programmer and Combat Designer, which required expertise in online features or multiplayer mechanics, it seems that hints pointing towards a multiplayer aspect are evident from the job listings and role descriptions.
Initially, it was intended for Cyberpunk 2077, originally planned, to feature a multiplayer mode. However, after its bumpy debut in 2020, this idea was put on hold. CD Projekt Red then decided to prioritize improving the main game instead, a decision that ultimately proved beneficial in the long term.
After the launch of Phantom Liberty and its subsequent updates, Cyberpunk 2077 has successfully regained public favor. This newfound goodwill places CD Projekt Red in a stronger position to reconsider some previously scrapped ideas, and it seems that multiplayer is one idea they might revisit.
The follow-up game is currently being developed by CDPR’s Boston studio, a team established specifically to produce triple-A games right from the outset, possibly with a focus on multiplayer features. Top management at CDPR has hinted at this possibility, and co-CEO Michał Nowakowski confirmed in an interview with Reuters towards the end of 2024 that they are indeed considering multiplayer aspects for the sequel; however, he did not provide specific details about these plans.

2025 kicked off with CDPR expanding their team, hinting at a focus on developing an online-compatible foundation. But fear not, fellow RPG enthusiasts! CDPR isn’t abandoning its traditional roots. In fact, Nowakowski has reassured us that single-player games are deeply ingrained in the studio’s core values.
It’s highly probable that Project Orion offers you an ideal blend: a captivating single-player experience alongside the opportunity to join forces with friends. The open-world and sandbox style of Cyberpunk is inherently suited to cooperative or shared multiplayer; a feature that fans have been eagerly anticipating since its debut.
Simply put, all indications seem to converge towards a single outcome. Although the label “Multiplayer” might not appear on the packaging just now – but with such consistent clues, it’s almost as good as being verified.
