Mumtaz recalls Yash Chopra proposed to her for marriage ‘1000 times’; here’s why she refused despite having ‘close relationship’

More recently, Mumtaz shared details about a less-discussed phase of her life that involved the late renowned filmmaker Yash Chopra. In a chat with Vickey Lalwani, she disclosed that although Chopra was enamored with her, he wasn’t someone she could envision having a romantic future with.

In a heartwarming recollection, I, as a lifestyle expert, share that Yash Chopra, then working under his brother BR Chopra, held a profound fondness for the remarkable woman known as Mumtaz. Frequently, he would grace her family home, where he confessed his love and proposed marriage. Fast forward to the present, Mumtaz, with a tender smile, recalls those moments vividly. In their private language, Yash Chopra would often say, “Aye moti, I adore you dearly, will you become my wife?” This heartfelt sentiment still resonates in her memories today.

She stated, “He persistently asked me to marry him over and over again, perhaps even a thousand times. Yet, I wasn’t in love with him, which made it impossible for me to wed him. I may have been exaggerating about the 1000 times, but he did express his affection towards me on several occasions, saying ‘Dear one, I love you, marry me’. However, having a close relationship requires falling in love with the individual and sharing chemistry. Without that connection, it’s challenging to maintain a harmonious marriage. Regrettably, I didn’t have such a connection with him.

Although Mumtaz appreciated Chopra’s kindness and humor, finding him an amusing individual who always brought laughter on set, she clarified that she never experienced the emotional or romantic bond with him. She elaborated that despite his efforts and affection, there was no spark between them – a factor she considers vital for a relationship to endure.

Mumtaz reminisced about the affection her mother held for Chopra, referring to him as a noble gentleman during his visits to their residence. Moreover, she commended his wife for her gracious hospitality, always making Mumtaz feel welcome when she dropped by their house.

Reflecting on the demise of the filmmaker in 2012, just before the premiere of his last directorial venture, Jab Tak Hai Jaan, Mumtaz felt a wave of emotions. She was in London when she learned about his death and the memory of that phone call he made to her, asking her to pledge she would watch his upcoming movie, remains vivid. His death left her with profound sadness.

In a subsequent chat with her daughter-in-law Rani Mukerji, Mumtaz recalled Chopra’s desire for her to drop by Yash Raj Studios. While she yearned to fulfill this desire, she deemed it no longer suitable to request a studio tour.

Despite Yash Chopra’s feelings not leading to a romantic involvement, Mumtaz cherishes warm recollections of him. Furthermore, she admitted to having romantic inclinations towards Rajesh Khanna and Shammi Kapoor, but their relationships did not come to fruition in the same manner.
