As a seasoned Call of Duty player with over ten years of gaming experience under my belt, I must say that Modern Warfare 3’s map pool has been nothing short of phenomenal. The blend of nostalgic OG MW2 designs and Sledgehammer’s original landscapes released in the live-service model has created a diverse and engaging experience for players like myself. However, even the most brilliant maps can be marred by poor design choices, as is the case with the latest addition to Modern Warfare 3: Yard.
In the past 10 years of Call of Duty games, Modern Warfare 3’s map collection has been among the best. But as the game enters its final stages, there’s a possibility that this could be surpassed.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that each game, be it the classic designers of the original Modern Warfare 2 maps or Sledgehammer’s unique landscapes in the live-service model, brings an element of enjoyment to me (except for the monotonous Shipment).
1. The newly introduced Modern Warfare 3 map is remarkably good, yet players find it hard to appreciate it because of the recently implemented cel-shaded overlay.
Modern Warfare 3’s Yard map is being let down by its cell lighting
1. In Season 5, we introduced a new map called Yard, which is often referred to as ‘Sledgehammer‘. This name fits because it continues the theme of disorder and chaos, with its central chokehold building surrounded by paths that loop around. There are two lanes leading off from this structure that can be accessed by jumping over certain points.
However, criticism arises due to the shift in lighting from the updated aesthetic. Experimenting with different styles in Call of Duty, particularly Vortex modes and the 8-Bit sandbox, developers have adopted cel-shading for Yard, which appears to be met with disapproval by players as it seems to resemble the Borderlands overhaul.

1. Regarding the Reddit post, most comments about Yard’s map could be summarized as, “Excellent layout, yet the lighting is disappointing.” One frequent comment read, “I admire the design of this map, but I dislike its appearance. It’s simply too distinct from other map designs in terms of graphics. Although some people enjoy cell-shading, I prefer the look that Call of Duty currently has.“
“Another person concurred, expressing, ‘The layout is commendable. However, I’m not a fan of the cell-shaded map designs they’ve been using. They’re not abominable, but I’ve simply never preferred that art style and it seems strange when the character models and weapons aren’t similarly rendered'”
A different supporter shared a similar opinion, saying, “I’m not fond of the cell shading. It works well enough for special events, but I wouldn’t prefer it for regular gaming experiences.”
Modern Warfare 3 features some exceptional original maps, and Yard is among them. However, its impact could have been even greater if it had maintained the consistent lighting found in maps like Rio, Vista, and Stash House.
