My Wife Finally Gets Me After I Made Her Watch Ernest Scared Stupid

As a reader, I found this heartwarming narrative about a man and his wife connecting over an unexpected medium – a classic ’90s movie character named Ernest P. Worrell. This story takes me back to my own childhood memories where shared experiences with family through movies or television shows often served as bonding moments that helped shape our relationships.

I didn’t claim that “Ernest Scared Stupid” was among the top ’90s films or anything similar, but this timeless Halloween comedy has been a favorite of mine since I initially watched it as a child. More recently, following several years and numerous efforts, I managed to persuade my family to watch Ernest P. Worrell face off against a band of malevolent trolls in one of the most entertaining Halloween movies. The experience had quite an impression, particularly on my wife.

Even though it might sound surprising, my wife, who has been by my side for twelve years and knows me better than most people on Earth, seems to have a deeper grasp of me, my character, and my affection for Ernest-related things. It’s not that we’ve grown apart – we’ve built a family together, with three children, two dogs, two cats, and five chickens (the ducks took flight) – but watching this seemingly frivolous movie has given her fresh insights, making me feel like she truly understands me more than ever before.

This Was The First Time My Wife Had Really Watched An Ernest Movie

It’s been my observation over time that not everyone shared my childhood fascination with the “Ernest” movies, nor do they recall the tales from films like “Ernest Scared Stupid,” where milk supposedly wards off trolls, or the plot twists in “Ernest Goes to Jail,” involving an evil twin, or the efforts to save a cherished summer camp as depicted in “Ernest Goes to Camp,” one of the most memorable summer camp movies. My wife, for instance, hasn’t experienced these stories during her upbringing.

Growing up in the ’80s, she was familiar with the character, but never actually watched the movies. In her own words, “I spent most of my time with my sisters,” implying that she didn’t spend countless hours watching those old VHS tapes to the point where they became distorted and played strangely. It seems she had more productive ways to fill her free time than getting lost in the world of a beloved character who was a significant part of mine and my brother’s childhood, especially since we were both quite fond of Mr. Worrell.

From what I discovered, her initial encounter with the character Ernest P. Worrell and his riotously funny multiple personas was in the film “Ernest Scared Stupid.” This proved to be a rather extraordinary experience for her.

At First, She Didn’t Get Ernest P. Worrell Or Why I Was So Obsessed With Him

Given that my wife wasn’t familiar with the world of Ernest movies, she didn’t understand the humor surrounding Ernest P. Worrell, nor did she comprehend why her 36-year-old husband would behave like a child when his name came up. Instead, she found him resembling a lean John Cena (and it’s hard to imagine him differently), who often ended up getting struck on the head, making funny faces, or becoming the target of jokes.

Indeed, all those points are valid, and it’s particularly true that Jim Varney bore a striking resemblance to the legendary wrestler-turned-actor, Ernest. However, in my opinion, Ernest was much more than just a goofy character. Yes, he was known for his comedic antics, but beneath the humor lies a heart of gold. He might stumble and fumble, but he’d go to great lengths for those he cherished, even when they mocked him or exploited him. Admittedly, Ernest could be grating at times, but isn’t that true for most of us?

Initially, my wife might not have grasped Ernest or my unwavering loyalty towards him. However, once the movie ended (with its 80+ minutes), she had a completely different perspective.

But After Finishing The Movie, She Was Like ‘Oh, This Makes Sense’

Let me clarify, “Ernest Scared Stupid” isn’t a deep, transformative film, but after watching it, I feel like my wife has a deeper understanding of my humor, peculiarities, and even my annoying habits. Following the movie (her initial encounter with the Ernest series), she responded with a sense of “Ah, now it all makes sense,” regarding my unique personality traits.

Through watching the movie, my spouse delved into understanding me better. She discovered that those humorous yet questionable Ernest films significantly influenced me during my early years, explaining his frequent bad and nonsensical jokes, his belief in milk being an effective tool against trolls, and his unwillingness to let go of a part of his childhood. Although it may seem absurd and far-fetched, I believe that she has now grasped the core of who I am after this experience.

It’s Not Like We Were Strangers, But I Had Never Exposed My Wife (Or Kids) To This Side Of Me Before

For 12 years, my spouse and I have been a pair, so we’re not newcomers when it comes to diving into the world of “Ernest Scared Stupid.” However, despite my efforts to share the charm of Ernest with her (and our kids), I hadn’t managed to do so until now.

Instead of making a direct comparison, watching that movie reminded me of an experience I had years ago when I watched “Little Women” with my wife. That viewing session gave me a deeper insight into her and her upbringing as one of three sisters. In a way, Jo March resonated with my wife, while each of the March sisters reflected aspects of her own siblings. This experience not only increased my admiration for the movie adaptation but also deepened my understanding of my wife and her background.

Rewatching Ernest Scared Stupid Also Helped Me Realize How Much These Movies Shaped My Childhood

Rediscovering “Ernest Scared Stupid” as a grown-up brought home to me just how deeply these films influenced my childhood and forged lasting memories and bonds with my siblings. It’s rare that I get to spend time with them now, given our 700 miles apart, but watching Ernest bump his head, find himself in a tight spot, or scare himself witless transports me back to the cozy evenings spent in our living room, huddled around our trusty VHS players.

Unlike many ’90s movies that have lost their charm over time, “Ernest Scared Stupid” seems to be even more delightful now than it was over 30 years ago. It’s quite possible that my nostalgia is coloring my perspective, but revisiting this film with my family has been a joyous trip down memory lane. This sentiment is particularly strong after recalling how much I adored the movie’s opening credits sequence.

In essence, I believe my wife has a unique insight into my personality due to the character Ernest P. Worrell. It may seem peculiar. As the year draws to a close, perhaps I’ll need to secretly add “Ernest Saves Christmas” to my list of annual holiday movie rewatches for tradition’s sake.
