Naomi Scott's Smile 2 Character Has Much in Common With 'Demigod' Taylor Swift

As a seasoned movie critic with decades of film viewing under my belt, I must say that Parker Finn has truly outdone himself with “Smile 2.” The director’s keen eye for storytelling and his knack for subverting expectations are on full display here. It’s rare to find a sequel that not only matches the quality of its predecessor but surpasses it, and Finn has managed to do just that.

Film director Parker Finn has shared insights about his inspiration for crafting Naomi Scott’s character Skye Riley. He drew inspiration from powerful “demigod” women during the creative process. Finn has achieved an uncommon feat in Hollywood, delivering a sequel that not only matches its predecessor but surpasses it.

During an extensive discussion with Variety, Finn opened up about the creative process behind “Smile 2,” revealing his inspirations for deviating significantly from the original film despite initially having no plans to make a sequel. He explained how he managed to create such a distinct continuation.

I aimed to surprise viewers with our approach for the sequel. The original film was written and directed with a standalone quality in mind. At that moment, there was no intention for a sequel. Sometimes, sequels are made with less genuine or cynical motivations. If I were to ask viewers to watch another film, I wanted to provide something unique and innovative.

How Taylor Swift Played a Role in Smile 2

Although there was much buzz among fans in early 2024 about whether Taylor Swift would feature in Deadpool & Wolverine, it appears that the renowned pop star subtly influenced the plot of Smile 2. While Swift is not featured in the film and has no direct connection to its production, Finn suggests that she played a significant role in shaping the story’s development. He stated:

To make this narrative compelling, I required a character who would resonate both thematically and emotionally, bringing fresh perspectives to the story and its setting. That’s when an inspiring concept struck me for the character of Skye Riley, a renowned pop star.

“I was examining a few of the demigoddesses we’ve made famous: Is there an actual human behind that persona? After all, even Taylor Swift can’t always be ‘Taylor Swift.’

It felt like such an interesting place to start. Plus, I didn’t want to set it in dark, dingy basements or spidery addicts or anything like that. This world of a pop star is glamorous, it’s glitzy, it’s shiny, it should be fun. I thought, “Can I present that world authentically, and yet tonally make it feel quite frigid and disquieting? Unsettling and very isolating and lonely?” That felt powerful to me as a place to start.”

In simple terms, “Smile 2” might become the blockbuster hit in the horror genre, which is currently experiencing a resurgence. This upcoming film could dethrone last weekend’s unexpected box office champion, “Terrifier 3”, and provide an ample supply of spine-tingling content for horror enthusiasts as Halloween draws near.
