Naomi Watts Gives Disappointing Update on The Watcher Season 2

As a seasoned movie buff with over three decades of experiencing various cinematic journeys, I must say that Naomi Watts‘ performance in “The Watcher” was nothing short of mesmerizing. The series, while not exactly hitting the bullseye every time, still managed to keep me hooked with its intriguing plot and exceptional acting.

Actress Naomi Watts, known for her role in the Netflix suspenseful series “The Watcher”, shared some less than optimistic updates about the show with its fans. While she didn’t explicitly mention cancellation, her comments on the project were not particularly positive.

Initiated by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, “The Watcher” debuted on streaming platform Netflix in 2022 to positive initial reviews. However, its favorable reception didn’t last long as its Rotten Tomatoes score dropped to 56%, where it currently stands. IMDb reports a score of 6.5/10 for the series. Despite this, Netflix decided to renew the show for a second season shortly after its premiere.

After Ryan Murphy’s contract with Netflix ended, updates on Season 2 of “The Watcher” seemed to slow down or disappear. Now, the showrunner is fully committed to his new deal with Hulu, focusing on the female-centric legal drama “All’s Fair.” When asked about the possibility of a second season for “The Watcher,” actress Tate Watts provided an unsatisfactory response.

There hasn’t been any real movement on it yet.

As I chatted with Entertainment Weekly during the Toronto International Film Festival, I mainly focused on discussing my latest project, “The Friend.” This heartfelt film finds me sharing screen time with a colossal Great Dane and portraying a novelist who unexpectedly inherits care of this enormous canine upon her friend’s untimely passing. Regarding any news about Season 2 of “The Watcher,” I kept it brief, merely mentioning that there are updates on the horizon.

If there’s any news, I’m afraid I don’t have it. I wish I did, as it sounded like a lot of fun! Unfortunately, I can’t provide an update at the moment.

According to an article in Entertainment Weekly, it seems like the show might carry on without the Brannocks, who are Watts’ family characters. Back then, her comments about rejoining the show weren’t overly optimistic: “To be frank, we left the house, so I’m not sure if we’ll return. I don’t know what their plans are, so unfortunately, I can’t give you a definitive answer.

The Watcher is One of the Best Shows in the Ryan Murphy Universe

In a new residence in New Jersey, Nora and Dean Brannock find themselves pursued by an ominous figure known as “the Watcher.” As they grapple with unsettling threats, it becomes evident that their neighbors are less than welcoming to the newcomers. The situation grows more sinister when they uncover the possibility that a former resident named John Graff could be responsible for the harassment. However, this revelation is tainted by the dark history of their home, where disturbing occurrences transpired years earlier.

The show is inspired by the actual events involving Derek and Maria Broaddus, a pair who relocated to a house in New Jersey in 2014. They eventually had to leave in 2019 following years of receiving menacing letters instructing them to do so. The character John Graff is loosely modeled after John List, a notorious New Jersey serial killer who committed murders within his own home, including those of his family members.

“The Watcher” is set within the creative realm of Ryan Murphy, with him handling both writing and directing responsibilities for several episodes. Though it may not be his finest work, it offers a captivating spin on the topics that Murphy often explores. By using a thriller setting, Murphy challenges the conventional notion of the flawless American family, revealing that some monsters can reside within our homes. Notably, this production showcases exceptional performances by Naomi Watts and Bobby Cannavale as Nora and Dean.
