The CyberConnect2’s Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm series has garnered high praise for its impressive and intricate retelling of the Shippuden saga, making it possible for fans to forego the anime. This acclaim is a clear indication of the team’s dedication, as they successfully compressed this epic narrative into three games, producing some of the most memorable cutscenes in video game history.
As a devoted fan, it’s hard not to appreciate the epic work done on Naruto Shippuden in the games. Yet, it’s disheartening that the original series didn’t receive this level of attention. The initial Ultimate Ninja Storm failed to capture the essence of the manga and anime, offering just a handful of boss battles towards the end. With Boruto still not fully resonating with fans, I believe it’s high time we got a game that truly does justice to the original Naruto storyline – a tale that’s been waiting patiently for its due recognition.
Enthusiasts of the Naruto series often point out that Naruto: Rise of a Ninja and Broken Bond on Xbox 360 do a good job retelling the original narrative. However, these games are only playable on Xbox 360 and haven’t been made backward compatible for Xbox One or Series consoles. It would be ideal if they were remade for contemporary systems, but they contain a lot of filler content and a combat system that heavily depends on tricks.
Following CyberConnect2’s successful retelling of the Dragon Ball Z narrative through Kakarot, it seems these developers could achieve the same feat with Konoha’s Jinchuriki. Allowing players to engage in a solo adventure featuring Naruto, Sasuke, Sakura, Kakashi, and more could be an enjoyable experience. If they also incorporate a fully explorable Konoha, as they did in the Shippuden games, it would make it even more enticing.
It’s not just wishful thinking that CyberConnect2 could revamp the initial Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm as a remastered version. Refreshing the game with enhanced graphics and an upgraded Story Mode would bring joy to fans. Interestingly, some fans actually appreciate the gameplay of this first installment more, so CyberConnect2 has an opportunity to satisfy two groups simultaneously by reintroducing these mechanics while also incorporating new storylines and additional characters.
Currently, the team at CyberConnect 2 has their hands full with various projects, including the Dragon Ball Daima DLC for Kakarot and Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles 2 for SEGA. As such, it’s understandable if a new game in the ninja series is developed by another studio. While we hope they return to Naruto someday, their current workload might suggest that they could use a break from the ninja genre.
Rediscovering the thrill of Naruto through a standalone, solo game could revitalize this beloved series. It’d offer fans another intriguing reason to engage with this franchise beyond fighting games. While an Ultimate Ninja Storm reboot might spark interest, a fresh single-player title could potentially surpass it.
