Natalie Portman & Moses Ingram Reveal Lady In The Lake's Real Message - Exclusive Interview

As a long-time gamer and avid fan of both movies and television, I was thrilled to learn about Natalie Portman and Moses Ingram’s collaboration in Apple TV+’s “Lady in the Lake.” With a career spanning over three decades, Natalie Portman has graced our screens with her captivating presence since she was just 12 years old. Her journey from “The Professional” to “Star Wars” and even an Oscar-winning performance in “Black Swan” is nothing short of impressive.

Since making a splash in Hollywood at just 12 years old with her role in “The Professional” in 1994, Natalie Portman has become a well-established actor. Known for iconic performances as Queen Amidala from “Star Wars” and her Oscar-winning role in “Black Swan,” Portman is now stepping into the world of episodic television after three decades in the industry. Starting July 19, you can catch her in “Lady in the Lake,” a seven-episode miniseries streaming on Apple TV+.

In this intriguing series, Natalie Portman plays the role of a 1960s housewife who leaves her mundane life behind to pursue journalism after discovering a murder. Her quest for truth interconnects with that of a dedicated Black activist and mother, portrayed by Moses Ingram, pulling her further into the mystery. Based on Laura Lippman’s novel of the same name, this gripping crime thriller delves deeper into themes of gender, race, and equality in the tumultuous 1960s America.

In a private conversation with Looper, Portman and Ingram opened up about their filming days on “Lady in the Lake.” It wasn’t until they promoted the show that they realized they had both acted in the “Star Wars” franchise, an connection they hadn’t previously acknowledged.

Being huge fans of “Star Wars,” I can’t help but notice the common thread between us. Have we ever talked about our individual experiences connected to this iconic franchise? Sharing stories from the sets where magic was brought to life would be an exciting exploration of our shared history.

Natalie Portman: We’ve never talked about it until today, now everyone’s asking! [Laughs]

Moses Ingram: It’s pleasant, indeed. Few get to experience such a world as we have, and fortunately, we two are among them.

Portman: It’s a very lucky shared experience.

As a huge fan of Natalie Portman’s illustrious acting career, I can’t help but marvel at her extraordinary journey in Hollywood. It’s been three decades since she first graced our screens as the young assassin’s apprentice in “The Professional.” Since then, she’s captured our hearts and imaginations with her roles in blockbuster franchises like “Star Wars” and “Marvel Cinematic Universe,” not to mention an Oscar-winning performance.

Portman: Absolutely. With seven hours of episodes at your disposal, you have the luxury of delving deeper into a character’s intricacies. It’s more like a long-distance run instead of a short sprint. In essence, preparing for five months of 16- or 17-hour workdays is an entirely different ball game compared to completing a movie in just 30 days.

As a newcomer in Hollywood’s game, I’ve had the pleasure of working with the experienced Natalie. She shared some valuable insights and offered guidance that I believe will prove helpful as I navigate the uncharted waters of fame.

Ingram: I think she is a walking example of how you want to do this thing.

Portman: Thank you.

Once on set, there was an incident where I found myself in a difficult situation. She took great efforts to expedite the process, preventing me from staying in that position longer than necessary. This experience highlighted the importance of being there for others and lending support when needed. Furthermore, maintaining a balanced life outside of Hollywood enhances one’s artistic abilities. Her career choices and accomplishments serve as an inspiring reminder of this every day.

Portman: Thank you.

In this intriguing series, there are many themes worth exploring, particularly those concerning gender and racial issues. So, what valuable insights do you think viewers might gain by watching “Lady in the Lake”?

Ingram: You must consider intersectionality. That would be my short and sweet answer.

As a woman who has gone through my own fair share of struggles, I deeply connect with Portman’s sentiment. Her words resonate with me, as I’ve often found myself so engrossed in my own battles that I failed to notice the hardships of those around me. It’s a humbling experience to realize this and strive to be more empathetic towards others. I hope that through these portrayals of strong women, audiences can also relate to their struggles and learn from them, just as Portman intends.

Two first episodes of “Lady in the Lake” become available today, July 19, on Apple TV+. Subsequent episodes will be released on a weekly basis until August 23.
