Natasha Lyonne to Star in Film Based on Joe Hill’s ‘Basketful of Heads’ Comic

Actress Natasha Lyonne is set to both star in and produce a movie titled “Basketful of Heads“. This is an adaptation of Joe Hill’s graphic novel series with the same name. According to recent reports from Deadline, the film will be penned and directed by Ana Lily Amirpour, who is known for her 2014 indie film “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night”.

Basketful of Heads” tells a grimly amusing horror story focusing on June Branch, who’s tasked with rescuing her boyfriend from captors using a magical axe that allows severed heads to keep living post-decapitation. The comic was penned by Hill, with art contributions from Leomacs and Reiko Murakami, and it debuted through the DC Comics imprint Hill House Comics in 2019.

Bluestone Entertainment will team up with Lyonne’s Animal Pictures, Weed Road led by Akiva Goldsman and Greg Lessans, in the production of the upcoming film. In an announcement, Lyonne expressed her eagerness to collaborate with talented director Ana Lily Amirpour on this cherished intellectual property, and is grateful that Akiva and Bluestone presented it to Animal Pictures for development. This project is shaping up to be a real knockout!

Amirpour too expressed her enthusiasm for the venture, expressing:

I can’t wait to collaborate with the hilariously talented and smart Natasha Lyonne to transform this comic into a movie! We aim to create an innovative antihero who finds herself in a peculiar journey that awakens something within her and flips her world upside down. Expect it to be filled with dark humor, surreal moments, and plenty of grisly scenes!

At present, I’m unable to share any specific details such as filming schedules or premiere dates since the project remains in its initial stages of development.

Natasha Lyonne’s Acclaim as an Actress Continues To Rise

More recently, Natasha Lyonne has been praised for her performance in “His Three Daughters,” a production by Animal Pictures, where she showcased her versatile acting abilities by mastering both the humorous and dramatic elements of the script. Following that, Lyonne completed shooting the second season of her widely-appreciated series on Peacock, Poker Face, which is expected to air this year. Coming up next for Lyonne is a role in Marvel’s The Fantastic Four: First Steps, set to hit the big screen soon.

After her critically acclaimed debut film “A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night“, Ana Lily Amirpour has gone on to direct other notable works. These include the feature films “The Bad Batch“, featuring Suki Waterhouse, Jason Momoa, Keanu Reeves, and Jim Carrey, as well as “Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon” starring Kate Hudson and Craig Robinson. She has also ventured into television directing, working on series such as “Legion, Castle Rock, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities“, and Jordan Peele’s modern take on “The Twilight Zone“.

In the pipeline for Akiva Goldsman as a producer are:

1. A screen adaptation of Tom Clancy’s novel “Rainbow Six”.
2. The fourth season of “Star Trek: Brave New Worlds”, where he also assumes the role of showrunner.
3. Writing the script for “Practical Magic 2”, a return to the universe of the 1998 film, with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock reprising their roles.
4. As for now, there’s no official announcement regarding the release date, but it is anticipated that “Practical Magic 2” will hit the screens sometime around 2026 or later.

Adaptations of Hill’s works previously created include the film “Horns” with Daniel Radcliffe in the lead role, the AMC television series titled “N0S4A2”, and the terrifying horror production by Blumhouse Pictures named “The Black Phone”.
