The Super Bowl is known for hosting some of the most exciting and buzz-worthy television events annually, not just for football, but also for the commercials that are shown before, during, and after the match. During this highly-watched championship game, movies and TV shows can gain significant recognition for their projects by showcasing quick previews and sneak peeks of their most anticipated releases that year. Additionally, there’s often a good deal of self-deprecating humor that acknowledges the big game and its name. However, this year’s highly anticipated superhero film, Superman, chose not to air during the Super Bowl, instead opting for a commercial spot during the Puppy Bowl.
Despite not being associated with the Super Bowl event, James Gunn and the Superman marketing team still found a way to reference it through a social media post. In this playful teaser video (viewable below), Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardener showcases various poses to display his unique hairstyle with the caption “the only bowl I need.” This amusing clip also provides fans with their first detailed glimpse of the Green Lantern’s appearance in the upcoming film.
In his white attire, Guy Gardner mirrors the color scheme of his comic book version, who stands out with a special jacket and gloves compared to other characters like John Stewart and Hal Jordan. Since specific details about Gardener’s part in the upcoming Superman film are being kept secret, it remains unclear how significant his role will be. However, the Green Lantern corps appears promising in the new DC Universe.
Nathan Fillion’s Green Lantern is a Tease of What’s to Come in the New DCU
Nathan Fillion has previously portrayed a DC Comics character in a James Gunn film, and before he put on the bowl cut and power ring for Superman, he played The Detachable Kid (TDK) in 2021’s The Suicide Squad. Unlike his more serious role in this movie, Fillion had a less conventional appearance as TDK. However, his character’s powers were the most extraordinary among the Task Force X members. The ability to detach his arms from his body proved to be of little use, and TDK unfortunately met an early demise in the film.
Nathan Fillion appears to have a larger part in Gunn’s initial film within the newly established DCU as a Green Lantern, though he plays one of the more notorious corps members. However, Fillion won’t be the sole Green Lantern in Gunn’s interconnected cinematic and television universe. Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler have been announced to lead the cast in the HBO series titled “Lanterns,” portraying John Stewart and Hal Jordan respectively. As of now, there’s no news on whether Guy Gardner will feature in the show, but filming for the series is scheduled to begin this month.
Currently, spectators can savor Fillion’s portrayal of Gardener with his iconic bowl-cut style in the brief trailer for Superman. Much like Gunn tends to dress his preferred associates, including Michael Rooker, in humorous wigs and hairstyles for minor characters in movies, Fillion also falls under this trend. Here’s hoping fans get to see a lot more of Green Lantern once the film hits theaters this summer.
