National CineMedia Swings to Third Quarter Loss on Lower Ad Revenue

As a long-time gamer and movie enthusiast, I have to say that the latest financial report from National CineMedia has left me a bit puzzled. On one hand, I’m excited about the growth in their premium Platinum offering and the increasing interest from top advertisers. On the other hand, the decrease in theater attendance and overall revenues is a bit disheartening.

In-theater ad firm National CineMedia reported a third-quarter loss due to decreased theater attendance and overall income, as stated on Tuesday.

In Q3 of 2024, National CineMedia reported a loss of $3.6 million compared to a profit of $181.8 million in the same quarter of the previous year. To be precise, this represents a decline. The total revenue for this period was $62.4 million, which is approximately 10% lower than the $69.6 million earned in Q3 of 2023.

The recent financial data shows that NCM LLC was deconsolidated in April 2023 and then reconsolidated again on August 7, 2023, marking the completion of a financial reorganization as the company exited its court-supervised Chapter 11 bankruptcy process.

In the last quarter, our national advertising revenue dropped to approximately $46.8 million, as opposed to $52 million in Q3 of 2023. Contrastingly, National CineMedia surpassed analyst predictions for their Q3 revenue, earning a total of $58.03 million.

The number of people who visited screens in our advertising network during the third quarter was approximately 121.6 million, representing a decrease compared to the previous year when Christopher Nolan’s film “Oppenheimer” and “Barbie” were showing at local cinemas, with attendance then being around 131.7 million viewers.

Tom Lesinski, the CEO of National CineMedia, announced that his company delivered its fourth straight quarter of steady performance. They generated $62.4 million in revenue during this period, demonstrating their resilience as the box office growth continues to speed up. We are consistently growing our premium Platinum service, which has more than doubled since last year, and we’re welcoming new top-tier advertisers across our platform. As brands are looking for broader reach of highly valuable audiences in large numbers, they are increasingly turning to National CineMedia.
