Navy SEAL Slams ‘The Raid: Redemption’ for Unrealistic Action Scenes!

In the realm of 21st-century action movies, few can rival the acclaim garnered by “The Raid: Redemption,” directed by Gareth Evans. This film, brimming with tension and suspense, showcases the struggle of a SWAT team to flee a building controlled by a ruthless criminal mastermind, following an ill-fated raid. The narrative unfolds as they engage in relentless hand-to-hand combat using a wide variety of makeshift weapons and martial arts techniques. However, while fans are deeply invested, it’s been noted by a real Navy SEAL that the fights portrayed in “The Raid” may not be overly realistic.

Recently, Insider interviewed DJ Shipley, a former Navy SEAL, and presented him various fight scenes from popular action movies. One of these was the machete fight from “The Raid: Redemption“, a highly-acclaimed action sequence among fans. However, despite the intricate moves shown in the scene, it’s not entirely realistic. In the fight, Rama (Uwais) loses his weapon and must defend himself against two attackers armed with machetes. Shipley offered insightful comments on this sequence:

Redemption”, which is popular among fans. Although the scene features elaborate choreography, it’s not very realistic. In the sequence, Rama (Uwais) finds himself disarmed and must face two adversaries with machetes. Shipley shared his thoughts on this scene:

“Grab the sword lying behind you. He’s been standing at the door, waiting for two more men with knives to charge in. Grab a knife too, it might give you an edge. Break one of the table legs, move the table and push it towards the door to slow them down. Then start searching for anything useful nearby. At this point, you could do almost anything except stand still and let them get closer.

The ongoing critique of the machete fight persisted. The Raid has earned high praise from action enthusiasts for its unique mix of martial arts and weaponry in its combat sequences. However, what appears impressive on camera isn’t always reflective of reality. “He’s effective,” Shipley continued. “It’s enjoyable. Yet the truth is that everyone he’s battling seems to be a kung fu master, and they’re kicking, punching… ultimately, they’ll chop him into pieces with that machete.

‘The Raid: Redemption’ Earns a Measly 4/1 for Realism

Following the viewing of the fight scene in “The Raid: Redemption”, DJ Shipley expressed his opinions. He rated the scene a four, which was quite low compared to other films he had watched. DJ’s criticisms of “The Raid” were primarily focused on the plot decisions within the scene rather than the fight choreography or performances. In his view, there was an implausibility in a lone character, without any external resources, surviving an apartment building filled with danger.

Regardless of DJ Shipley’s assessment, The Raid: Redemption continues to receive high praise from fans. This film is widely recognized as a modern action masterpiece and gave birth to a sequel titled The Raid 2 three years later. Although The Raid 2 doesn’t enjoy the same acclaim as its predecessor, it boasts one of the most memorable kitchen fight scenes in action movie history.

Regarding director Gareth Evans, he consistently delivers action-packed films. His recent production, titled “Havoc“, features Tom Hardy portraying a police detective on a solo operation to save a politician’s son. “Havoc” has been noted as one of the most violent movies for Tom Hardy, and Netflix fans are finding it hard to turn away from it, despite varying opinions in reviews.
