As someone who grew up glued to the television screen during the golden age of emergency response dramas, I couldn’t be more excited about NBC’s upcoming “One Chicago” crossover event. The sheer magnitude of this undertaking is reminiscent of the time my sixth-grade science project nearly brought down the school’s power grid with my homemade volcano. But instead of a mountain of baking soda and vinegar, we have Dick Wolf’s masterful storytelling and Chicago’s crumbling infrastructure to thank for this spectacle.
NBC is uniting the public service equivalent of Voltron, their One Chicago collection – Medical Unit, Fire Department, and Police Division – for a television crossover event coming up early next year. This is the first time since 2019 that three series produced by Dick Wolf’s company have intersected in this way. Anastasia Puglisi, executive vice president of Wolf Entertainment and co-executive producer for all three shows, shared with Variety:
Creating a three-hour action movie is a highly challenging feat that demands seamless collaboration among our writers, actors, production teams, and producers. We’re fortunate to have top-tier talent in every department to tackle this task, strengthen the #OneChicago identity, and offer our audience an exceptional and captivating viewing experience. The city of Chicago is also a crucial partner in this endeavor.
And what an experience it will be. Thanks to this country’s crumbling infrastructure, the harrowing events on the One Chicago franchise seem less and less far-fetched. It would seem art imitates life. The crossover logline reads: “When a gas explosion rocks a high-rise, Chicago’s first responders come out in force to rescue hundreds of civilians. It’s the calamity beneath the surface, however, that sends our heroes on a race to save 40 people trapped deep underground, including two of their own.”
Worlds Collide in the ‘Chigaco’ Universe
Crossovers between television shows can draw audiences effectively because viewers find joy in witnessing their favorite universes collide. With intellectual properties now having their own cinematic universes, it’s simpler than ever for TV and film properties to blend. The intrigue of observing diverse characters and stories intermingle satisfies a primal part of our brains that makes for captivating television. It’s like savoring the perfect pairing of chocolate and peanut butter – two excellent tastes that complement each other wonderfully. Perhaps, this unique combination could even be featured in an upcoming episode within the universe of One Chicago.
The shows “Chicago Fire” and “P.D.” have enjoyed great success, with “Fire” leading the way as the longest-running, having aired for 13 seasons since its debut in 2012. “Med,” which premiered in 2015 following “P.D.’s” 2013 start, has also completed at least 10 seasons. Additionally, Wolf’s company produced another series titled “Chicago Justice,” but it was compared unfavorably to “Law and Order,” the most illustrious show in Wolf Entertainment’s portfolio, leading to its cancellation after only one season.
On the night of January 29th, the three-part event will commence at 8:00 PM. It will kick off with “Chicago Fire,” then move on to “Chicago Med” at 9:00 PM, and wrap up with “P.D.” at 10:00 PM.
