The NCIS series continues to thrive on CBS, with popular shows like NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney scheduled for the 2025 TV lineup and renewed for another season. Additionally, previously concluded spinoffs such as Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Hawai’i are available for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription. However, the franchise is set to debut its first series exclusive to that platform – NCIS: Tony & Ziva. Brian Dietzen, who worked alongside the spinoff’s lead actors Michael Weatherly and Cote de Pablo for many years on NCIS, explains why fans should be eagerly anticipating this new addition.
In my conversation with Dietzen regarding the NCIS episode “Close to Home” that reintroduced Jimmy Palmer’s daughter Victoria (portrayed by Elle Graper), I inquired about what he’s eagerly anticipating in NCIS: Tony & Ziva. He disclosed that he has some insights into future events, as he frequently chats with Weatherly and exchanges texts with de Pablo, expressing:
I’m absolutely thrilled! The concept seems quite intriguing, and it carries an air of coolness about it. Unfortunately, I haven’t had a hand in its creation, but I’ve peeked at a few scripts. There are several instances that remind me of classic NCIS dynamics, yet this production is unlikely to follow the conventional NCIS format. Unlike the usual episodic structure revolving around a case of the week involving a lieutenant or petty officer, this show presents something entirely new. And let me tell you, my anticipation for it is skyrocketing!
Although each version of NCIS has its unique elements, such as different settings and time periods like NCIS: Origins, they’ve all adhered to a similar “case of the week” format. However, NCIS: Tony & Ziva is diverging from tradition by presenting a continuous narrative. This is why the spinoff is debuting on Paramount+, mirroring the approach taken by the revival of Criminal Minds. The title of the show, NCIS: Tony & Ziva, is somewhat ironic given that the main characters are no longer affiliated with the law enforcement agency. We won’t delve into the specifics of that for now.
According to Brian Dietzen’s account, it seems that Tony & Ziva will be a more emotionally charged series compared to NCIS. However, he emphasized that it will still maintain the essence and spirit of the show where Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David were originally from.
As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but feel excited about this upcoming project! With such talented actors on board, I’m confident that their performances will be nothing short of spectacular. The chemistry between these characters is legendary, and I have no doubt it will shine through once more. This seems to be a departure from the typical NCIS storyline, yet it still carries the essence that makes it so beloved. In essence, I believe this production will be truly remarkable and unique in its own way.
Since Season 11’s “Past, Present, and Future” episode of NCIS in 2013, Tony and Ziva haven’t shared the screen. However, the long-awaited reunion happened when Ziva emerged from hiding in Season 17 of NCIS. Fans are excited to witness them raising their daughter Tali together. But, as is typical for these characters, their lives won’t remain peaceful. When Tony’s security firm gets attacked, he and Ziva will be compelled to go into hiding to identify the culprit. As hinted in the show’s official synopsis, they might also learn to trust each other again so that they can finally experience their unique fairytale ending.
After wrapping up filming for NCIS: Tony & Ziva by late February, we’re left with nothing but patience to discover when it will air on Paramount+. Fingers crossed that the spinoff not only meets, but surpasses Brian Dietzen’s expectations, given what he’s been informed about so far. In the meantime, catch him as Jimmy Palmer every Monday at 9 pm ET on CBS in NCIS.
