NCIS: Origins’ Austin Stowell Actor Explains Why One Of The Main Female Leads Won’t Be Gibbs’ Love Interest, And It Makes A Lot Of Sense

As a long-time fan of the NCIS franchise, I can’t help but feel excited about the upcoming prequel, NCIS: Origins. The prospect of delving into Gibbs’ past and watching Austin Stowell breathe life into the character is tantalizing.

In 2024’s TV lineup, a new series titled “NCIS: Origins” will debut during fall, taking us back to 1991 and the early days of Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the NIS team. Although Mark Harmon is involved as an executive producer and narrator, portraying the present-day Gibbs, it’s Austin Stowell who steps into the shoes of the young Gibbs from over three decades ago. The show will also introduce Mariel Molino’s character, Lala Dominguez, as one of Gibbs’ teammates during this period. However, fans should not expect a romantic relationship to develop between her and the main protagonist.

Stowell dismissed the idea that there could be a romantic connection between the main characters in NCIS: Origins, as he expressed during an interview with TV Insider. To put it simply, he said…

I’m striving to demonstrate my abilities, and it’s not in a romantic sense. They share a similar spirit, being headstrong, strong-willed, and intelligent. It’s often said that opposites attract. However, what occurs when individuals are alike?

It seems like, due to their striking similarities, it might lead to friction or even dislike between Leroy Jethro Gibbs and Lala Dominguez. However, since they need to work together to solve crimes, this tension could add an element of drama. But don’t expect any friendship between them to last long. Instead, Caleb Martin Foote’s character, Benjamin “Randy” Randolf, will be the one Gibbs develops a bond with. Here, opposites attract, as Gibbs’ reserved nature and Randolf’s outgoing personality complement each other nicely. This friendship could help transform Gibbs into the great detective he is capable of being.

NCIS: Origins’ Austin Stowell Actor Explains Why One Of The Main Female Leads Won’t Be Gibbs’ Love Interest, And It Makes A Lot Of Sense

According to reports, the upcoming NCIS prequel series, NCIS: Origins, is said to stick close to the original storyline despite some unexpected cast changes. This news should delight fans.

During the screen test for NCIS: Origins, Mark Harmon had merely two concise words to express his thoughts towards the new Gibbs actor.

It’s important to recall that NCIS: Origins starts only a few months following the tragic murders of Gibbs’ wife Shannon, daughter Kelly, and their killer, drug dealer Pedro Hernandez. The traumatic event left a lasting impact on Gibbs, one he never truly recovers from. As a result, it seems unlikely that he would be emotionally ready for a serious romantic relationship, even with someone like Dominguez. Furthermore, we know that Dominguez won’t be among the three women Gibbs marries between 1991 and 2003.

In addition to Austin Stowell stepping into the role of Gibbs, the new series NCIS: Origins will also include Kyle Schmid portraying a younger Mike Franks (previously depicted by Muse Watson) and Diany Rodriguez as a younger Vera Strickland (originally played by Roma Maffia). The principal cast is further comprised of Tyla Abercrumbie playing Mary Jo Sullivan, the agency’s Field Operation Support Officer, along with recurring actors Daniel Bellamy, Robert Taylor, Patrick Fischler, Julian Black Antelope, Lori Petty, and Bobby Moynihan. NCIS veterans Gina Lucita Montreal and David J. North are serving as showrunners for the series.

The debut of NCIS: Origins takes place on Monday, October 14, following the initial episode of NCIS‘s Season 22. Similar to other shows within the NCIS series, you can stream its episodes with a Paramount+ subscription.
