As a long-time aficionado of the NCIS universe, I must admit that the prequel series, NCIS: Origins, has been a fascinating journey thus far. The revelation of new details surrounding Gibbs‘ tragic past has only deepened my appreciation for the narrative.
In the spin-off series, NCIS: Origins, although the actual murders of Leroy Jethro Gibbs’ wife and daughter aren’t depicted, it delves deeper into their deaths than what was initially presented in the original NCIS. For instance, we learn that Randy, a teammate of Gibbs, was originally tasked with protecting his family. However, he requested to be relieved from this duty, which unfortunately led drug dealer Pedro Hernandez to target and kill another NIS agent, Kurt Mitchell, instead. As of now, Gibbs remains unaware of this fact, but the showrunner of Origins has hinted that this will be addressed in Season 1, and I’m eagerly anticipating how it will unfold when the series airs in 2025.
In a chat with David J. North from NCIS: Origins, during which he revealed details about the upcoming villain hinted in the midseason finale and future developments for Mike Franks, I posed a question to the showrunners (who include Gina Lucita Monreal) regarding whether Austin Stowell’s Gibbs would eventually discover the link between Caleb Foote’s Bernard “Randy” Randolph and his deceased wife and daughter. North replied:
Indeed, we’ll eventually reach that point when we grasp it fully. However, to be honest, that’s not the crux of the matter for Gina and me. If Randy hadn’t brought up that case, Randy wouldn’t be alive today. Shannon and Kelly would still be missing. It appears that Randy’s guilt is more about Agent Mitchell and the family he left behind. Yet, once Gibbs understands this truth, it won’t be something he’ll ever hold against him.

Discussing with us, the executive producer of ‘NCIS: Origins’ explained the process they use to determine when to stay true to existing lore and when to introduce new elements or rewrite history (retcon).
Keep an Eye Out”: The Creator of NCIS: Origins Speaks on a Significant Gibbs Query Deliberately Left Unanswered for Now.
In “Sick as Our Secrets,” Randy stepped away from his role on Shannon and Kelly’s security detail due to his newborn son’s colic causing constant sleepless nights. Fearing that his lack of sleep might lead him to make an error during the duty, he requested a replacement. Kurt Mitchell was chosen for the task, but while driving Shannon and Kelly to a safe house, Mitchell was fatally shot by Pedro Hernandez. The shooting caused a car crash that unfortunately claimed the lives of both Shannon and Kelly as well.
In the TV show NCIS: Origins, it’s revealed that Randy took on numerous security assignments as a means of seeking forgiveness for an unspecified event. However, after discussing his feelings with Father Bobby in “Sick as Our Secrets”, it appeared that most, if not all, of his guilt was eased. Later, it was hinted that Randy had once been assigned to protect Gibbs’ wife and daughter. Although the exact circumstances remain unknown, I was relieved to learn from David J. North that there will be no lingering resentment between them. Since Shannon and Kelly would have perished regardless of which agent was driving, Gibbs wouldn’t hold it against Randy for declining the protection detail. Consequently, their professional relationship should remain unscathed.
As a die-hard movie buff eagerly anticipating my weekly fix of gripping narratives, I’m thrilled to share that “NCIS: Origins” will be back on CBS, starting Monday, January 27. To satiate the craving for more action and intrigue in the meantime, don’t forget to subscribe to Paramount+ and stream the first half of Season 1 or any other shows from the expansive “NCIS” franchise. Enjoy the ride!
