NCIS: Origins' First Episode Confirms Whether Mark Harmon Appears

As a long-time “NCIS” fanatic with a heart full of nostalgia, I must say that Mark Harmon’s return as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in “NCIS: Origins” has been a delightful surprise! I remember vividly the day he bid adieu to the series back in 2021, and many thought it was the end of an era. But alas, the man couldn’t stay away from the procedural franchise that made him a household name.

After departing from “NCIS” in 2021, Mark Harmon’s absence as Leroy Jethro Gibbs left fans wondering if they had seen him for the last time. But the seasoned actor found it hard to stay away from the crime drama series for long. The news broke that Harmon would narrate his character’s prequel series, hinting at a return. With “NCIS: Origins” now airing, it appears that his role might be larger than initially expected.

Contrary to assertions made by certain CBS high-ups, Harmon is indeed seen in “NCIS: Origins” two-episode debut, “Enter Sandman”. He returns as Gibbs, with brief on-screen appearances that suggest he’s still residing in Alaska and preferring solitude. In the opening episode, he’s shown chopping wood and later sitting by a fire to pen his tale. In the subsequent installment, a fleeting image of him is glimpsed through a window near the end.

Harmon has refuted suggestions he didn’t appear as Gibbs in the recent episode of NCIS. Although CBS executives may not have been deceiving us, it seems Harmon’s grand return was unexpected, as it wasn’t initially planned.

Fans of “NCIS” will undoubtedly rejoice at Mark Harmon reprising his character Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the prequel series, albeit not being the central figure. The main focus of “NCIS: Origins” lies with Austin Stowell’s portrayal of a younger agent; however, it was recognized by the showrunners David J. North that Harmon still has an important part to play in the storyline, as he shared with TV Insider.

Initially, the plan wasn’t to locate Gibbs in Alaska, but through discussions between me and fellow co-showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal, we eventually suggested the idea to Mark. We felt it was significant, and as it turned out, he agreed. It’s a delight for the viewers and us too, and the day we went there to shoot was really enjoyable.

It remains uncertain if this will be the final appearance of Harmon’s Gibbs on “NCIS: Origins,” but should the seasoned actor wish to return, the opportunity remains open. However, a positive note is that fans can still enjoy his voice in every episode, which is far from nothing.
