NCIS: Origins’ Showrunners Clarified Where Lala Currently Stands With Gibbs, But I’m More Intrigued About The New Storyline Being Set Up For Austin Stowell’s Character

Last night marked the continuation of the first season of “NCIS: Origins,” with the episode titled “Flight of Icarus” joining its 2025 TV lineup. This episode, available for streaming with a Paramount+ subscription, primarily focuses on Mike Franks, delving into his past as a 21-year-old and his present-day investigation into an infantry officer’s death. Furthermore, there was a tantalizing update regarding Mariel Molino’s Lala Dominguez and Austin Stowell’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs that the showrunners, David J. North and Gina Luctia Monreal, discussed with TopMob. Moreover, they hinted at an exciting new plotline for Gibbs in the near future that has piqued my interest.

Lala Is Interested In Gibbs On Two Fronts

In the “Flight of Icarus” incident, Randy tried to arrange a date between Gibbs and one of his wife Junie’s friends. However, Gibbs declined as it wasn’t an appropriate time given that his wife and daughter had passed away less than a year ago. Following the confirmation of Cameron Reid’s suicide, Lala found out from Randy that the setup wouldn’t occur. She then mentioned to her colleague that whenever Gibbs is prepared for dating, ensure the woman is worthy of him. When I inquired North and Monreal about Lala’s intentions behind this remark, North suggested it could be either romantic interest or simply concern for Gibbs’ well-being.

She shows care for him, yet there’s undeniably something more for her as well. Without a doubt, there’s a hint of jealousy in the tone of that query.

Prior to the debut of NCIS: Origins, Austin Stowell stated that there would be no romantic tension between Gibbs and Lala. However, it appears that situation has since changed. Mariel Molino’s character is not only concerned about her teammate but also seems to harbor feelings for him. Gibbs, on the other hand, isn’t ready to pursue a relationship at this time. It’s worth noting that Gibbs will eventually marry and divorce three women, none of whom are Lala. But with the possibility that Origins could continue beyond its initial season, these two characters might explore their feelings for each other in the early seasons, if the series continues after this first outing.

Gibbs Will Be Attending Veterans Support Meetings

During the probe of Cameron Reid’s demise, Leroy Jethro Gibbs stumbled upon a veterans’ assistance brochure, and during his conversation with the group administrator, he was invited to attend a gathering. Later, I was informed by Gina Lucita Monreal that Gibbs will indeed participate in the group sessions this season, as she put it.

The narrative will feature his participation in these gatherings and its impact on him, without a doubt. Moreover, we are eager to explore the psychological well-being of our characters, particularly in such a profession and environment, as this offers us an opportunity for a more profound examination.

As a devoted fan, I’ve always felt that Gibbs never truly found peace over the loss of Kelly and Shannon until deep into Season 19 of NCIS, when Mark Harmon decided to part ways with the series. However, it seems that he managed to reach a point where he could function more healthily amidst his grief. Working at NIS provided younger Gibbs with the stability he needed in his life, but I’m eager to see how attending veterans support meetings might further aid his emotional well-being. Perhaps confronting and working through these issues could pave the way for him to consider romantic relationships once more.

Due to an increase in the number of episodes for NCIS: Origins Season 1 from 13 to 18 last November, we now have extra time to get acquainted with these characters. However, there’s no news yet about whether or not Season 2 will be produced. Fresh installments air every Monday at 10 pm ET on CBS.
