Nearly Two Years After Amanda Seyfried Went Viral For Singing Wicked’s ‘Popular,’ She Addressed Whether She Was Auditioning For The Film

As a gamer who grew up watching musicals and has a deep love for both Broadway and Hollywood, I can’t help but feel a twinge of nostalgia when it comes to the recent news about Ariana Grande being cast as Glinda in “Wicked.” I remember vividly the moment Amanda Seyfried shared her rendition of “Popular” during COVID times, embodying Glinda with such grace and charm that it felt like magic.

Wicked is one of the biggest films on the 2024 movie schedule. So, as you can imagine, a lot of big names walked through director Jon M. Chu’s door in hopes of earning the part of Glinda before Ariana Grande was chosen for it. While our 5-star Wicked review makes it clear that Grande is absolutely the Good Witch through and through, Amanda Seyfried previously became a “Popular” pick for the role when she belted out Glinda’s famed song a couple of years ago. Now that Wicked’s out and it’s been two years since her viral moment, the Mamma Mia! actress has shed some light on the subject.

Amanda Seyfried Talks About Her Viral “Popular” Video

In early 2023, following Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo being announced as the main actors for the Wicked play, Amanda Seyfried’s stylist shared a short video clip of the actress singing “Popular” while wearing a stunning silver gown. Here it is:

In this video shared by Elizabeth Stewart, the actress completely personified Glinda the Good Witch, as she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role as Elizabeth Holmes in “The Dropout”.

When Seyfried was asked about the video this week, she had this to say:

During the COVID period, I was working on a Lancôme photoshoot in Long Island City. Elizabeth Stewart was my stylist. At that time, I wasn’t yet auditioning for Wicked, but I sensed its approach. So, I was essentially goofing around, and I said, “This dress reminds me of Glinda.” To which Elizabeth replied, “Go ahead.” Later on, she shared the post.

When conversing with people, the actress who starred in Mean Girls clarified the background of the video, making it clear that it wasn’t an audition for the Wicked movie. She went on to say that it was simply a delightful moment captured during her Lancôme photo shoot at the time.

Yet, she candidly admitted that maybe it wasn’t wise for Stewart to share the post, as it led to an influx of fans advocating for her role in Wicked, despite her admiration for the stylist.

Did Amanda Seyfried Audition For The Wicked Movie?

Although the video you see might seem like a spontaneous portrayal of Amanda Seyfried as Glinda, it’s worth noting that she admitted to having auditioned for the role during the film’s production. To quote her directly, “I did in fact try out for the movie.

I really put my all into it, no doubt about it. Plus, it took quite some time and effort. And somehow, things always unfold as they should.

It’s not unexpected that Amanda Seyfried was considered for the role of Glinda, given her past roles in movie adaptations of popular Broadway musicals like “Mamma Mia!” (2008) and “Les Misérables” (2012). Previously, it had been reported that she was in contention for the part, and even Dove Cameron mentioned auditioning for the role.

Even so, the actress has no hard feelings about losing the role, sharing these words:

She excels at putting on quite a spectacle, and ever since we got the soundtrack, my children can’t seem to get enough of it. Everything feels perfectly in place indeed.

Her, and us all!

Initially, there was some debate about Ariana Grande being chosen to play Glinda when the news broke, but the film’s success has confirmed that she was indeed a fitting pick. Some fans are now stating they prefer the Wicked movie over the original Broadway production! Thus, it appears that everyone is content with how things have unfolded in the end.
