After a shocking report in Vulture detailed sexual misconduct claims made by eight individuals, Neil Gaiman, a renowned author with diverse achievements, has released a statement asserting his innocence. Previously, allegations of sexual misconduct were leveled against Gaiman last summer through the Tortoise Media series, “The Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman.” In this six-episode podcast, five women alleged that Gaiman, best known for “The Sandman,” had sexually assaulted them. However, Gaiman swiftly denied those claims. On Monday, more individuals came forward through a devastating story titled “There Is No Safe Word,” published by New York Magazine’s Vulture.
Neil Gaiman responded to the claims made in a Vulture report by publishing a post titled “Speaking Out”. In this piece, he accepts that he’s not flawless and concedes interactions with the women mentioned, but he firmly denies any instances of non-consensual sexual activity.
Reflecting on our past interactions, I revisited the conversations I had with several women, following the allegations that have since been labeled as abusive. Upon re-reading these messages, they appear just as they did when I first received them – they portray a mutual, consensual relationship between two individuals who enjoyed their sexual encounters and expressed a desire to meet again in the future.
At the time I was in those relationships, they seemed positive and happy on both sides.
Reflecting on them now, it’s clear to me that there were numerous opportunities for improvement. In the past, I was more focused on myself than on others, being open to physical intimacy but not emotional connection. I acknowledge my shortcomings – I wasn’t as considerate or thoughtful as I should have been. I handled people’s feelings carelessly, which is something I deeply regret and consider selfish. I was immersed in my own narrative, often overlooking the needs of others. (Neil Gaiman)
According to Gaiman, he’s actively learning and putting in the required effort to develop himself, yet he unequivocally asserts that no instances of abuse ever occurred.
Concurrently, when I look back at my history and examine the facts rather than the allegations, I firmly believe that no abuse occurred. To reiterate, I’ve never participated in any form of non-consensual sexual activity with anyone.
Neil Gaiman’s Projects Impacted by Recent Wave of Abuse Allegations
The article by Vulture features accounts from eight women, four of whom were part of ‘The Master: The Allegations Against Neil Gaiman’. Two of these women mentioned in the report alleged that the abuse happened in Gaiman’s presence when his son was around (Gaiman refutes this claim). One of these accusers additionally revealed that Gaiman’s son started referring to her as a ‘slave’ and insisting she refer to him as ‘master’, mimicking his father’s pattern with his victims.
Neil Gaiman is a highly esteemed writer recognized for works such as the comic book series ‘The Sandman’, novels like ‘American Gods’, and the adaptation of ‘Good Omens’ on Prime Video (a project he co-wrote with Terry Pratchett, also serving as showrunner, executive producer, and writer for multiple episodes). In 2023, Gaiman made Time magazine’s list of the 100 Most Influential Individuals, celebrated for his exceptional storytelling skills.
Due to recent controversies surrounding Gaiman, his ongoing projects are facing changes: Amazon has decided to end production of the popular series “Good Omens,” replacing a planned third season with a 90-minute finale. Reports indicate that Gaiman and his production company are no longer associated with this project, although he did contribute to the series finale script. Disney has postponed plans for an adaptation of “The Graveyard Book.” Netflix’s “Dead Boy Detectives” was canceled in August, but it is unclear if this decision was directly related to the allegations against Gaiman; however, the second season of “The Sandman” is still scheduled for release on Netflix.
