It’s common knowledge that Netflix revolutionized the way people around the world enjoy media through streaming. Today, it still ranks among the top and most excellent subscription services available. The company is clear about its choices, as demonstrated by its ongoing collaboration with The Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Even though some have criticized the watchable projects featuring Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, including one scheduled for release in 2025 on Netflix, the co-CEO of this media giant, Ted Sarandos, explained their continued partnership with the royals. Interestingly, Hermès was mentioned in his justification for the alliance.
As Netflix reaches its 25th anniversary, CEO Reed Hastings spoke with Variety about the enduring influence of the streaming service. The discussion covered his brief role in Seth Rogen’s upcoming Apple TV+ series titled “The Studio” (set to air on March 26 in their 2025 schedule), the ongoing streaming competition, and popular Netflix productions like “Stranger Things”, as well as its collaboration with Harry and Meghan.
More recently, the streamer unveiled “With Love, Meghan,” which, despite facing criticism, continues to hold its partnership. The executive finds it intriguing that the couple, particularly Meghan, has been underestimated in terms of their influence on trends and culture. Notably, certain items she owns have seen increased demand after they trended online. Despite the production’s delay due to LA fires, the studio remains committed to the collaboration.
It appears to me that Meghan is often undervalued when it comes to her impact on popular culture. When we unveiled the trailer for ‘Harry & Meghan’ documentary series [in 2022], the items she was using, such as the shoes and the Hermès blanket, were subjected to intense scrutiny by the media for days. As a result, those items sold out in numerous locations across the globe. It seems that people are deeply intrigued by Meghan Markle, yet she and Harry tend to be underestimated.
As a passionate movie enthusiast, I’ve been captivated by the recent productions of The Duchess of Sussex, particularly the series “Harry & Meghan,” both now streaming on Netflix. These shows created quite a stir before and after their releases, with the media and public alike closely examining every detail. Remarkably, merchandise associated with her and her spouse flew off the shelves as soon as it hit the market, indicating a strong and profound fascination with this dynamic couple.
The recently debuted series has sparked both viral and critical reactions, yet not everyone dislikes “With Love, Meghan.” Despite the series being scrutinized by many since its initial unveiling, some individuals are now voicing their opinions. Notably, a significant number of Black women have spoken up in support of the “Suits” alum and her lifestyle show’s portrayal. This discussion has brought attention to the fact that figures like Martha Stewart or Ina Garten face less criticism for similar content.
It appears that both the streamer and those supporting the actress have valid arguments. Since she became associated with the royal family, there has been an increased curiosity about her, encompassing everything from her personal preferences to her fashion sense. This is evident in the new series, where Mindy Kaling inquired about the details of her outfit from the hostess.
Essentially, it’s clear why Netflix would hold onto this deal and continue investing in it. Regardless of personal feelings towards them – be it admiration, disdain, or neutrality – Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are significant figures in current culture. Many people follow their lives closely and have an interest in watching their content on streaming platforms like Netflix.
