As a millennial who grew up during the peak of the Twilight mania, I must say that I am thrilled to see the return of Bella and Edward in a new animated series! The news of Midnight Sun being adapted into an eight-episode Netflix series has me as giddy as a school girl at her first concert.
The beloved Twilight saga is making a comeback in a fresh format, as Netflix has commissioned an eight-episode animated series. Back in April 2023, Lionsgate Television initially announced the Twilight series, and it was later confirmed that this would be an animated adaptation earlier in 2024. Interestingly, it seems that Netflix has secured the series based on the Twilight books and revealed that the storyline won’t follow the original novel but rather the spin-off book, Midnight Sun, instead
According to Variety, Netflix has directly commissioned the series “Midnight Sun,” and Sinead Daly is set as the writer and executive producer. Daly brings her previous experiences from shows like “Tell Me Lies,” “Raised by Wolves,” “The Get Down,” and “The Walking Dead: World Beyond” to this new project. The novel’s author, Stephenie Meyer, began working on “Midnight Sun” in 2008 but had to pause when the manuscript was leaked online. The completed book, published in 2020, revisits the “Twilight” story from Edward Cullen’s viewpoint. This fresh perspective could significantly shape the series narrative, potentially delving into various characters’ experiences throughout the tale
The Twilight Saga Returns
In 2005, Stephenie Meyer penned the first book of the “Twilight” series, which soon became a massive hit. The year 2008 was significant for this franchise as it saw both the publication of the last book, “Breaking Dawn,” and the release of the movie adaptation of “Twilight,” starring Kristen Stewart as Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen. By the 2000s and early 2010s, “The Twilight Saga” had grown into a pop culture sensation; every movie in the series was a blockbuster hit at the box office. The five films of the “Twilight Saga” franchise earned a combined total of $3.3 billion and continue to be popular even though no new installment has been released since 2012
The idea of Netflix developing an animated series based on the Twilight saga seems very strategic. When the Twilight films became available on Netflix in 2021, they quickly climbed to the top of the streaming rankings. Additionally, Netflix has been actively investing in animation, especially adaptations from movie properties. They recently released “Terminator Zero” as an anime and are working on a new Ghostbusters animated series. The recent trend of reviving popular young adult literature to capitalize on audience nostalgia is evident with the releases of “The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” and the Disney+ revival of Percy Jackson and the Olympians. With Warner Bros. working on a Harry Potter series for HBO, Netflix’s acquisition of Midnight Sun and continuation of the Twilight franchise appears to be a shrewd business move
