Netflix Orders Untitled Creature Thriller From ‘Umbrella Academy’ Writer

Netflix has given the go-ahead to an unnamed supernatural series created by Jesse McKeown, who is well known for his work as a scriptwriter on successful television shows such as “The Umbrella Academy” and “19-2”.

As I, an avid gamer, excitedly dive into the latest project from Jesse’s creative mindset, I can’t help but feel a rush of anticipation. His daring, grandiose concept promises a rollercoaster ride of excitement, wrapped in the warmth of a family drama. I eagerly look forward to joining Netflix Canada’s members on an immersive journey to the stunning coastlines of Newfoundland, as we delve into this timely tale that explores themes of community, resilience, and adaptability.

McKeown has written for various TV shows such as “The Big Charade,” “Robson Arms,” “Rogue,” “Republic of Doyle,” and “DaVinci’s Inquest.” This Canadian limited series will take place and be filmed in Newfoundland, along the country’s Atlantic coast. The six-episode story revolves around a mysterious sea creature causing havoc in a secluded town, forcing a tough fisherman to defend his family, his community, and his rapidly disappearing lifestyle.

Laura Churchill, head of Picture NL, expressed delight as Netflix chose her hometown for their latest production. “Newfoundland and Labrador’s stunning vistas, experienced film crews, and rich storytelling heritage make it an ideal location for such a large-scale project,” she stated. “We eagerly anticipate collaborating with the team to highlight everything our province has to offer.

I’m thrilled to share that I’ve been involved in the creation of a captivating limited series for Netflix. As the showrunner and executive producer, I’ve had the pleasure of working with an exceptional team on this Canadian indie production. The writing talents behind our series include Karen Walton from ‘Orphan Black’, Perry Chafe, and Natty Zavitz. Chris Hatcher, known for his work in ‘The Madness’ and ‘Sweet Angel Baby’, and Sharon Hall, who has worked on ‘The Expanse’ and ‘Utopia’, are also serving as additional executive producers. I can’t wait to see this project unfold!

Apart from creating its own U.S. originals in cities like Toronto and Vancouver for production, Netflix collaborates frequently with CBC, Canada’s public broadcasting service, on local series such as Anne, inspired by the Anne of Green Gables books, and Alias Grace, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel.

Lately, Anna Lambe has been featured in the comedy series “North of North,” which is set in the Arctic and is available on Netflix as well as CBC and APTN in Canada. Furthermore, Netflix has made several popular Canadian shows like “Schitt’s Creek,” “Kim’s Convenience,” and “Workin’ Moms” accessible to a global audience.

McKeown is represented by UTA and Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment.
